MACRO TRAINS 61 HEALTH WORKERS TO EXPAND INTEGRATED TESTING SERVICES

Sixty-one Ministry of Health health workers are today sitting their final examinations across Lilongwe, Blantyre and Zomba, marking the final stage of a 28-day training programme aimed at expanding access to quality HIV, syphilis and Hepatitis B testing services.

Implemented by the Malawi AIDS Counselling and Resource Organisation (MACRO), with support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the training equipped participants with skills in integrated testing, HIV self-testing, index testing, the new three-test HIV testing approach, counselling and data recording.

The training also covered triple testing for pregnant women, supporting early identification and timely linkage to care.
Upon successful completion, the newly trained providers will support facilities facing staffing gaps, helping increase testing capacity and minimise interruptions to essential testing services.

FIVE READY+ PEER SUPPORTERS ADVANCE IN HIV TESTING TRAINING

Five READY+ Peer Supporters have successfully passed the theory examination of the HIV Testing Services (HTS) training conducted by the Malawi AIDS Counselling and Resource Organisation (MACRO), with support from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The five joined the 28-day training alongside Ministry of Health, health workers and are now proceeding to practical placements at different health facilities to apply their skills under supervision.

The training is equipping them with skills in HIV testing and counselling, providing an opportunity to build on their experience as Peer Supporters while developing skills that can support their future pathways beyond READY+.

MACRO AND KCH MOVE SET COURSE FOR SUSTAINABLE HIV TESTING SERVICES

The Malawi AIDS Counselling and Resource Organisation (MACRO), through the IMPACT Project, and Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) are working to strengthen sustainable HIV Testing Services (HTS) across the hospital, following a stakeholders’ engagement meeting that occurred today in Lilongwe at Kamuzu Central Hospital, identifying a successful sustainability model in KCH’s paediatric department for possible replication across other departments.

The engagement brought together KCH management, HIV/AIDS coordinators and the MACRO team to review the progress and achievements of HTS activities, discuss gaps and share lessons from implementation.

A key highlight of the meeting was the sustainability model established in the paediatric department, where Ministry of Health staff have taken full ownership of HTS through clear structures and strong staff participation. The model has enabled the department to coordinate and manage its testing services effectively using existing staff.

Following the discussions, KCH management and stakeholders agreed to explore how the model can be adapted for use in other departments, while also developing a roadmap to strengthen HTS and build the capacity of Ministry of Health testing staff across the hospital.

The engagement also provided an opportunity for MACRO and KCH to recognise the importance of continued collaboration, teamwork and coordination in strengthening HIV testing services.

From a department-led success to a potential hospital-wide model, MACRO and KCH are working towards HIV testing services that can stand strong and continue serving communities.

MACRO EMPOWERS 150 YOUNG PEOPLE THROUGH SAVINGS AND LOAN GROUPS

One hundred and fifty young people are gaining practical skills in saving, borrowing and managing money as MACRO, in collaboration with the Department of Community Development, conducts a four-day Village Savings and Loans (VSL) training across its READY+ facilities in Lilongwe.

The training, running from 15 to 18 September, brings together members of 10 Savings and Loan Groups (SLGs) from Area 25, Bwaila, Mitundu, Kabudula and MACRO Lilongwe Clinic.

Now on day 3, participants are learning how to save effectively, manage loans, keep financial records and run their groups more effectively. The training is also introducing the groups to the Government of Malawi’s VSL methodology, with Community Development Assistants and Officers providing technical guidance.

Among the participants are 30 READY+ Peer Supporters, who will also gain financial skills that can strengthen their own livelihoods and support other young people in their communities.

The initiative is part of READY+ efforts to promote the resilience and economic empowerment of young people. By strengthening their ability to save, access and manage loans responsibly, the training aims to help participants make better use of available economic opportunities.

The collaboration with Community Development also provides a pathway for the groups to continue using an established VSL approach beyond the project, strengthening their sustainability.

For these young people, the goal is bigger than saving money. It is about building the skills and confidence to manage what they have, grow their resources and create more secure livelihoods.

MACRO, QMD Intensify Quality Improvement Support in Lilongwe, Mzuzu

The Malawi AIDS Counselling and Resource Organisation (MACRO), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health’s Quality Management Division (QMD), is conducting simultaneous quality improvement (QI) supervision in Lilongwe and Mzimba North to strengthen health service delivery for adolescents and young people.

Now on Day 2, two teams are working alongside health facility staff to review QI projects developed in March 2026, identify areas for improvement and provide practical mentorship on the use of QI tools and approaches.

The exercise also seeks to strengthen the involvement of Peer Supporters in facility-level quality improvement and enhance collaboration between MACRO, QMD and district health stakeholders, and is expected to strengthen facility team’s capacity to identify service gaps, apply practical solutions and sustain quality improvements for adolescents and young people.

This will continue in Lilongwe and Mzuzu throughout the week, then move to Blantyre from the 21st of September to 25, covering five more MACRO READY+ supported facilities.
