From Action to Impact: Empowering Women Across Africa, ARWNET 2026 CONFERENCE

​Across Africa, our cultures are different, our languages are different, and our stories are different. But there is something that connects us all.

​Across borders and communities, refugee and migrant women have faced uncertainty, displacement, and challenges, yet they continue to rise.
They raise families, rebuild communities, speak up, lead, and create change.
​Their voices are not simply stories to be heard; they are voices that deserve a place in the decisions that shape our communities, our countries, and our future.

​From Kenya to DRC, from Ethiopia to South Africa, from Nigeria to Rwanda, from Sudan to South Sudan, and across communities throughout Africa.

​In 2026, refugee and migrant women leaders, advocates, researchers, policymakers, and partners come together to amplify women's voices and strengthen women's agency.

​The 2026 ARWNET Conference: a space for leadership, a space for dialogue, a space for action, and a space for change.

​Because when women rise together, together we rise. When women turn their voices into action, together we act. And when we stand together to build a more inclusive future, together we change the world.

On this International Refugee Day, we celebrate not only our resilience but also our collective strength to rise and take action. Every migration story is a testament to courage and hope.

We firmly affirm that safety is a fundamental right for all. The theme "Until Everyone Is Safe" resonates deeply within us. Every woman leader must stand and fight for every woman, girl, child, and family to live without fear and to find a safe refuge where they can thrive.

Our struggle does not end until the last one of us is safe. Together, we must continue to work for a future where peace, dignity, and justice prevail. Our voices are powerful, and our solidarity is our strength.

Let us never lose sight of our shared goal: "Together we rise, together we act, together we change the world until everyone is safe."

Together, we can make a difference.

World Refugee Day Message – ARWNET South Africa

As we commemorate World Refugee Day, ARWNET South Africa stands in solidarity with refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants who have demonstrated remarkable resilience, courage, and determination in rebuilding their lives.

This year, we reflect on the spirit of Ubuntu – "I am because we are." Ubuntu reminds us that our humanity is interconnected and that we thrive when we embrace one another with compassion, dignity, and respect. It calls on all of us to create communities where everyone feels welcomed, valued, and safe.

ARWNET South Africa strongly stands against xenophobia, discrimination, and all forms of exclusion. We believe that diversity strengthens our communities and that every person, regardless of their nationality or status, deserves equal opportunities and respect.

On this World Refugee Day, we celebrate the contributions of refugees to our society and reaffirm our commitment to promoting social cohesion, inclusion, and peaceful coexistence. Together with our partners, including Scalabrini, we continue to advocate for a South Africa where unity prevails over division and where the principles of Ubuntu guide our actions.

Today marks the official launch of our week-long campaign leading up to World Refugee Day 2026 on June 20.

At the African Refugee Women-Led Network (ARWNET), we believe that those closest to the challenge are closest to the solution. True safety cannot be handed down; it must be built with the direct leadership of displaced women and girls. This year, the global theme is "Until Everyone Is Safe", a vital call to protect, empower, and listen to the women leading the charge across borders.

As we approach World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2026, ARWNET continues to raise awareness and advocate for the dignity, health, and wellbeing of refugee women, IDPs, and vulnerable girls and women across Africa.

Menstruation is natural, yet many girls still miss school, face shame, or use unsafe materials because of poverty and lack of support.

Together, let us break the silence, end period stigma, and promote access to menstrual hygiene materials and education for every girl and woman regardless of her status or location.

No woman or girl should be left behind.
