On 5/06/2026, we joined the World Environment Day and International Day for Biological Diversity Commemoration.

At the event we also witnessed the Minister of Natural Resources, Hon. Patricia wiskes MP, presiding over the launch of the National State of Environment and Outlook Report, the first national environmental assessment since 2010 — 15 years later.

The report reviews Malawi’s land, forests, water, air quality, and biodiversity.

The event brought together policymakers, scientists, and communities to discuss protecting Malawi’s natural heritage and building a greener future.

As ACT, we remain committed to turning these discussions into action. Through our work with local communities, we help restore the environment and create sustainable solutions that improve lives.

WASTE ISN'T THE END OF THE STORY

A Circular Economy is a smarter way to use resources—where products and materials are designed to stay in use for as long as possible through reuse, recycling, and recovery.

By moving away from the traditional take–make–waste model, we can reduce pollution, conserve natural resources, and build a more sustainable future for generations to come.

🌱 Produce responsibly
🔄 Use efficiently
♻️ Reuse and recycle
⚡ Recover value from waste

Together, let's turn waste into opportunity and create a cleaner, greener Malawi.

Over 80% of healthcare incinerators are below standard, compromising safe medical waste disposal. Poorly managed healthcare waste spreads infections, harms waste handlers, pollutes the environment, and puts everyone at risk.

Healthcare waste is NOT ordinary waste – it must be handled safely and correctly. Proper segregation and disposal are essential to protect health workers, communities, and the environment.

84% of organic waste is recoverable. Most of Malawi's waste can be converted into compost, biogas, and briquettes, creating employment opportunities and turning waste into wealth.

The Green-Clean Malawi campaign calls for building a circular Malawi where waste becomes a resource.

Nyansi Mayazi Movement

The shocking reality is that only 30% of urban waste is collected in our country, leaving the vast majority of waste unmanaged and scattered in our cities and towns.

This waste crisis is fueling serious pollution, triggering disease outbreaks, and causing severe environmental degradation that affects every corner of our nation.

The unmanaged waste clogs waterways, contaminates soil, and harms the health of our communities, especially in urban areas where the problem is most visible. As a result, our environment is suffering, livelihoods are at risk, and the overall quality of life is declining because of the unchecked waste mess that surrounds us daily.

Time to act is now, and we need everyone to join hands in improving waste management practices, increasing collection services, and promoting recycling and clean initiatives.

The Green-Clean Malawi Conference recently highlighted a critical issue affecting public health in Malawi: the link between environmental risks and disease burden.

A key takeaway was that 52% of disease burden in Malawi is linked to environmental risks. Unmanaged waste fuels preventable diseases like cholera and malaria, making waste management a critical public health issue.

Poor environmental conditions expose communities to health hazards, increasing illness and healthcare costs.

This week we joined faith leaders, activists, and community advocates from across the country at the Faith Leaders Environmental Advocacy Training (FLEAT) organized by the Southern Africa Faith Community Environmental Institute (SAFCEI).

The gathering deepened learning, strengthened advocacy skills, and built collective action for climate and eco-justice in Malawi.

In-depth discussions focused on agroecology, waste management, sustainable farming practices that prioritize soil health and biodiversity.

Participants explored pathways to scale up agroecology, ensuring Malawi's food systems are resilient to climate shocks while safeguarding the environment.

The workshop also spotlighted environmental and climate justice – emphasizing the need for equitable, community-led solutions to address Malawi’s environmental challenges.

Faith traditions underscored the moral imperative to protect creation, with participants planning practical steps to advance climate action in their communities.

The event closed with regional action planning and a renewed commitment to environmental and climate justice rooted in faith and community action.
