Trissy is a 15-year-old Form 2 student at Chipasula Secondary School. She is the third born in a family of four. She lives in Area 24 with her parents. Her father, who does small businesses as they come, which are mostly hand-to-mouth. Because of this inconsistency, the money that her father makes mainly goes towards their survival (basic needs). Finding school fees and necessary resources is a problem. As result, she often gets chased out of class due to non-payment of fees, which makes her skip school days a lot.

Trissy is relieved with the sponsorship she has acquired from a sponsor via Fund a Girl Initiative, which she says will help her attend school consistently as she will no longer have to miss classes due to fees problems.

Meet Mphatso, she is a-15-year-old Form 3 student at Chipasula Secondary School. She lives in Chioko, T/A Tsabango in Lilongwe. She is the first born in a family of three.

He father left the family when she was just four years old. Her mother relies on piece jobs (maganyu), such as washing clothes for survival. Based on the way they live, Mphatso estimates that her mother makes about MK10,000 ($6) per month. This income is not enough to feed and support her and her siblings in school. She lacks school fees. Most times, she goes to school on an empty stomach and without lunch break money. Buying necessary school supplies like stationery is even a struggle. However, Mphatso is a very hardworking girl. Whenever she can’t go to school due to lack of school fees, she tries to educate herself by studying on her on, which helps her to be an A student always.

Mphatso is now beyond happy as she has been linked to a sponsor under Fund a Girl Initiative to support her secondary school education until she finishes. She says the scholarship has motivated her to even work harder and perform even better so that she can attain her aspiration of becoming a Bank Manager in future.

Meet Success, a 14-year-old Form 2 student at Chipasula Secondary School. Her biggest aspiration is to become a Laywer. Success lives in Chiluzila, Area 23, in Lilongwe. She is the last born in a family of five.

Her father is a tailor who makes about MK40,000 ($23.5) per month. That income alone is about the same amount for her school fees, hence supporting the whole family while trying to send all the children to school is a struggle for her parents. Success says she once stayed at home for 5 weeks due to the lack of school fees which led her to miss a significant amount of lessons, and affected her usually great performance. In addition, Success has an eye problem which also affects her in school. Unfortunately, she broke her eye glasses while moving desks to the exam room and currently uses large prints for learning, which slows down her pace. She says having the fees sorted and getting eye glasses (which she estimated to be about MK60,000/$35) would greatly impact her academic life and drive her towards making her dream a reality.

Thankfully, we have solved part of that problem via a sponsor who will support her secondary school education with tuition fees until she finishes.

Thandie is a Form 3 student at Chipasula Secondary School. Thandie is raised by a single mother along with her sibling who is also in secondary school. In order to support her family, her mother makes and sells flitters (mandasi) for a living. However, the income she makes from her small business is not enough. She struggles to sufficiently support her 2 children. Thandie lacks school fees and other necessary school supplies.

Via a kind sponsor at Fund a Girl Initiative, Thandie will now no longer have to worry about her education. She is excited about the scholarship as it will ensure that she successfully finishes her secondary school so that she can one day become a teacher and use her income to help her mother.

An interesting insight we found about urban poverty while collecting profiles for girls at Chipasula Secondary School:

Most girls cited that their fathers left and completely abandoned the family, leaving their jobless mothers who mostly rely on piece jobs (maganyu) to handle all responsibilities like food, rentals, and the burden of raising fees to send the children to school, which they barely afford.

While the causes and effects of poverty are many and individual experiences different, we believe that efforts to relieve the effects of poverty should be widespread in both rural and urban communities. Our program's inclusion of girls from Chipasula Secondary School exemplifies this commitment, as we strive to empower them through education and create opportunities for a brighter future.
