ECD COALITION MALAWI CALLS FOR MORE FUNDING FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT

The Early Childhood Development Coalition of Malawi, through Acting National Coordinator Steelu Phiri, is urging increased investment in ECD to address gaps in infrastructure, caregiver support, learning materials and access to quality services. The call comes as Malawi observes the 2026 ECD Week of Advocacy from October 2–6 under the theme "Championing Children; Investing Today, Securing Tomorrow.

Strengthening ECD Data Systems in Malawi: ECDMIS Review & Training Workshop

From July 9-10, 2026, the Early Childhood Development (ECD) Coalition of Malawi, with support from the Comic Relief and UK Aid Shifting the Power Programme (implemented by TILITONSE FOUNDATION in partnership with Comic Relief and the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office of the United Kingdom), convened a Review Meeting and Training Workshop on the ECD Management Information System (ECDMIS) at Hippo View Lodge in Balaka.

The workshop, officially opened by Mr. Trevor Hamela, Director of Child Affairs, brought together 61 participants (26 female, 35 male) including District Social Welfare Officers, District ECD Coordinators, Monitoring & Evaluation Officers, ECD staff (Balaka, Mangochi, Machinga & Zomba), Coalition members (Youth for Development and Productivity (YODEP), Youth Impact, The Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA), Sparkle Foundation), ECD Coalition Board Member representative and Staff from The Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare( Child Affairs department).

Key Achievements:
✅ Hands-on training in ECD data collection, data entry and dashboard navigation for 61 Participants.
✅ Issuance of user credentials enabling role-based system access for district officers government officers.
✅ Actionable recommendations gathered to inform nationwide expansion of the ECDMIS.

Way Forward:

Roll out ECDMIS training to additional districts, Balaka, Mangochi, Zomba and Machinga.

Train Child Protection Workers on digital data collection platforms(ECD Data).

Collect ECD Data in the four districts namely: Balaka, Mangochi, Zomba and Machinga.

Develop a resource mobilization plan for nationwide rollout.

The ECDMIS, developed in 2021 with World Bank support, is a critical tool for evidence-based planning and service delivery. Strengthening capacity at district level is essential to ensuring every child in Malawi is counted. Since 2023 the ECD data has not been updated. ECD Coalition supported this activity to ensure that the ministry has updated ECD data in the selected four districts namely: Balaka Mangochi, Machinga and Zomba.

📊 Strengthening Our M&E Framework for ECD!
On 23–24 June 2026, the Early Childhood Development Coalition held a two-day technical workshop to develop SMART indicators for tracking our strategic goals under the Shifting the Power Programme, supported by Tilitonse Foundation in partnership with Comic Relief and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) of the United Kingdom (UK Aid).

We were joined by coalition members, government representatives from the Ministry of Gender and Ministry of Education, and our Board of Directors bringing together 18 participants (8 females) for inclusive and impactful deliberations.
Key outcomes:
✅ Context-specific SMART indicators developed
✅ Targets reviewed and validated
✅ Full alignment with national and global ECD frameworks

These indicators will guide our monitoring, impact measurement, and evidence-based decision-making as we work to improve the lives of young children in Malawi.

Together, we’re building a stronger, more accountable ECD sector! 💪🏽📈

🌟 ECD Coalition of Malawi at the Umunthu Social Impact Forum 2026🌟
We showed up. We spoke up. And we made Malawi listen.

Our National Coordinator, Joylet Genda, and Programmes Officer, Steelu Phiri, proudly represented the ECD Coalition of Malawi at this year's Umunthu Social Impact Forum at Ufulu gardens Hotel in Lilongwe, standing shoulder to shoulder with Tilitonse Foundation and 150 senior leaders from government, business, and civil society.

Together, they showcased the work we are leading across the country: reaching young children, strengthening caregivers, and building early childhood development from the ground up.

The message from Minister Mary Navicha was clear "global funding is shifting, and Malawi must own its future". We couldn't agree more.
We are already on the ground, in communities across every region, proving that sustainable change grows from within. And now, we have a seat at the national table.
Thank you to Tilitonse Foundation for having us at the table. Together, we’re shaping a resilient, self-sustaining future for Malawi’s children and communities.

The ECD Coalition Malawi spent two productive days at the Sunbird Hotel reflecting, learning, and co-creating with partners. Our MEAL, Finance, and Programs Officers participated in outcome harvesting and small-group discussions to ensure our work under the Civil Society Strengthening Fund remains adaptive and impactful. Here’s to a stronger, more collaborative Year 2!

😊😊Strengthening Capacities for Early Childhood Development Coalition Members in Monitoring, Evaluation, and Communication

From 11th to 12th February 2026, the Early Childhood Development Coalition (ECDC) of Malawi successfully convened a two-day training workshop on Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) and Communication at Pottery Lodge in Dedza.

This vital capacity-strengthening initiative was made possible through the Comic Relief and UK Aid Shifting the Power Programme, implemented by the Tilitonse Foundation in partnership with Comic Relief and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). We extend our sincere gratitude to these partners for their generous support, which enables us to invest in the skills of those working on the frontlines of Early Childhood Development in Malawi.

The training brought together 31 dedicated participants, comprising ECDC staff and representatives from our esteemed member organizations, including:
Future for All
Sparkle Foundation
Livingstonia Synod – ECD Department
FEDOMA (Federation of Disability Organizations in Malawi)
DAPP Malawi
Youth for Development and Productivity
And many others committed to nurturing our nation's future.

For the two days, participants engaged deeply in:
✅ Developing robust M&E Plans and Frameworks to strengthen programme design and accountability.
✅ Mastering data analysis techniques to generate meaningful insights for decision-making.
✅ Crafting compelling, evidence-based donor reports and success stories to effectively communicate impact.

We are confident that the enhanced skills gained will directly improve how the ECD Coalition and its members monitor programmes, measure impact, and communicate the incredible work being done for children aged 0–8 across Malawi.
