๐ŸŒณ Urban trees cool cities โ€“ but not all trees, and not in the same way everywhere.

Increasingly urban planners are using trees as natureโ€™s ultimate air conditioner. But to maximize their efficacy in combatting the urban heat island effect, three major factors must be considered:
๐ŸŸข Tree traits
๐Ÿ™๏ธ Urban form
๐ŸŒก๏ธ Climate conditions

๐Ÿ“˜ Published in Communications Earth & Environment, a new meta-analysis of 182 studies across 110 cities and 17 climate zones reveals a complex picture.
โœ… In 83% of cases, tree planting brought peak monthly temperatures below 26 ยฐC.
โœ… In some areas, trees reduced pedestrian-level temperatures by up to 12 ยฐC.

But which trees are used, where and how, makes a big difference:
๐ŸŒ In tropical, temperate, and continental climates, mixed evergreen and deciduous trees in open urban spaces offer ~0.5 ยฐC more cooling than single-species setups.
๐Ÿœ๏ธ In arid climates, evergreen species outperform others, especially in compact urban areas.
๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Nighttime cooling can be limited by tree crowns trapping longwave radiation, reducing efficacy after sunset.
โš ๏ธ In some conditions, trees can actually trap heat instead of cooling things down โ€“ for example, when their leaves stop releasing moisture or when they block air from moving around.

๐Ÿ“Š The researchers built an interactive map and database, linking tree traits and cooling performance by city type, as a tool to help planners benchmark their strategies with climate-smart data.

๐ŸŒฑ Trees arenโ€™t just about cooling. They support SDGs across the board โ€“ from health (SDG 3) and climate action (SDG 13) to sustainable cities (SDG 11) and biodiversity (SDG 15).

๐Ÿ’กAs cities grow hotter, we need more science-based, context-specific guidance for greener, cooler urban futures.

On the morning of Friday, 1st May 2026, Nalikule College of Education marked a significant milestone with the official launch of its Chaplaincy Service. Themed "Blending Spiritual Growth and Academic Excellence" and anchored in Proverbs 1:7, the occasion brought together students, staff, and distinguished church leaders in a celebration of faith and learning.

The programme was rich and purposeful. After opening prayers and remarks by the Principal, Dr. Denis Khasu, the Guest of Honour, Right Reverend Biswick Chimbalu Nkhoma of Kaning'a CCAP, delivered the Biblical Reflection. Two keynote addresses followed, from Very Reverend Canon Emmanuel Makalande, Vicars General of the Anglican Diocese of Lake Malawi, and Dr. Vincent Chiwamba of Gospel Enterprises, each making a compelling case for spiritual formation as the bedrock of genuine academic excellence. College Chaplain Fr. Geoffrey Pilirani Jonasi then unveiled the Chaplaincy 5 Point Plan, laying out a clear vision for how the chaplaincy would serve the college community. Gospel artist Alex Nkalo rounded off the proceedings with a spirited performance before Right Rev. Nkhoma and Dr. Khasu jointly launched the chaplaincy and closed in prayer.

The ceremony concluded with the planting of ten trees, five umbrella trees symbolising shade and pastoral care, and five mango trees representing fruitfulness and purpose. Donated by Charles Bakolo, MCCN Voluntary National Coordinator, the trees were planted by the Guest of Honour, both keynote speakers, Deputy Principal Mr. January, and Fr. Jonasi. It was fittingly symbolic close to the day: a chaplaincy, like a tree, does not bear its full fruit overnight. It grows quietly, steadily, and, when well rooted, it endures.
