“LIFE WOULD HAVE BEEN DIFFICULT WITHOUT SOFF” — ALICE JOHN’S STORY

In Njombwa Village, TA Njombwa in Kasungu district, where SOFF is also supporting communities through its FCAP project, we followed the story of Alice John, a young girl whose education once hung in the balance because of financial challenges.

Alice was studying at St. Michael’s Girls Secondary School when financial difficulties forced her to transfer to Namitete Secondary School. Through the SOFF bursary programme under the GEE project, implemented in partnership with Plan International Malawi, Alice received support that enabled her to return to St. Michael’s and continue her education.

A month after the release of the 2026 MSCE results, Alice’s achievement remains worth celebrating as she scored 17 points.

During our visit to her home village, Alice reflected on what the support meant to her, saying life could have been much more difficult had SOFF not come to her rescue.

Her story reminds us that behind every achievement is a journey, and sometimes, the right support can make all the difference.

For four days, our 52 FCAP Community-Based Facilitators (CBFs) took part in training on planning and implementing the next phase of their community projects, as well as preparing communities to continue to work on their own.

The sessions focused on preparing CBFs for the work they will take forward in the communities. Spark MicroGrants also joined us throughout the training, contributing to the learning and discussions.

With the four-day training now complete, our CBFs are ready to take this knowledge into their communities and help them move from what they have identified to what they can do about it.

FROM NEARLY DROPPING OUT TO SECOND BEST IN THE COUNTRY

When Peter Bright Banda began missing classes, finishing secondary school was no longer certain.

The student from Dedza Secondary School had been considering dropping out or transferring to a community day secondary school closer to his grandmother’s home in Sungani Village, Traditional Authority Mawawa in Kasungu District.

Today, his story is very different.

Bright has emerged as the second-best-performing student nationally in the 2026 Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examinations, scoring an impressive 10 points.

But behind those 10 points is a journey of determination, resilience and opportunity.

Through the SOFF bursary programme under the GEE project, implemented in partnership with Plan International Malawi, Bright received support that helped him remain in school and continue pursuing his education.

What once seemed like a path towards dropping out has become a remarkable academic achievement.

Bright is among 609 girls and boys supported through SOFF bursaries between 2022 and 2025. His achievement is a powerful reminder of why keeping children in school matters and what can become possible when young people are given the opportunity and support to continue their education.

There is also a special connection to our work today.

Bright comes from Kasungu District, where he is part of a community linked to SOFF’s Community-Led Development (FCAP) work under the Titukulane programme.

From a young student at risk of leaving school to one of Malawi’s top performers, Bright’s journey is one worth celebrating.

Congratulations, Bright. Your story reminds us that an opportunity, when given at the right time, can help change the direction of a young person’s life.

FROM COMMUNITY PRIORITIES TO ACTION PLANS

With the 52 communities under the Direct Village Grant (DVG) having identified their own priorities, our recent engagement with them focused on helping them turn those priorities into practical project proposals.

Through these conversations, communities moved past the initial spark of an idea and began mapping out what it will truly take to bring their projects to life.

Since the sessions have now been completed, it's time for the communities to work on their proposals before submission.

The idea is there. The pieces are coming together. Now, the plan is taking shape.

STRENGTHENING THE TEAM BEHIND FCAP

Our Kasungu field team and partner, Njira Impact from Zomba, have completed a five-day Trainer of Trainers (ToT) on Implementation, Second Pathway Planning & Implementation, and Transitioning (IST).

The training was led by Spark MicroGrants, equipping the team with the knowledge and tools needed to support communities through the next stage of the FCAP journey.

With the field team now equipped, the knowledge gained will be carried forward to the Community-Based Facilitators (CBFs) as they are the people who work most closely with communities. They will be equipped to support communities as they turn their chosen priorities into practical livelihood initiatives.

From planning to preparation, and now towards action.
