Malawi has taken another important step in strengthening the protection of human rights.

Today in Lilongwe, the Malawi Government, through the Ministry of Justice - Malawi, with support from UNDP Malawi and partners, convened a validation workshop of the State Party Report under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).

The workshop brought together government institutions, civil society, and development partners to review and refine Malawi’s responses to key human rights issues.

Opening the workshop, Mrs. Gertrude Lynn Hiwa, SC, Solicitor General and Secretary for Justice, said:

“The ongoing task lies in translating these commitments into consistent practice, ensuring that all persons fully enjoy the rights guaranteed under the Covenant.”

She added:
“Your presence and participation…demonstrate a shared commitment to ensuring that the principles enshrined in the Covenant are realized in practice”.

Speaking on behalf of UNDP, Dr. Ernest Yeboah said:

“The State Party reporting process is not simply a procedural requirement; it is a vital accountability mechanism that enables States to assess progress, identify gaps, and strengthen national systems for the protection of human rights.”

Through the UNDP Human Rights Project, supported by the Governments of Embassy of Iceland in Lilongwe and Royal Norwegian Embassy in Lilongwe, Malawi, Malawi has made progress in strengthening national reporting systems, including the establishment of the National Mechanism for Implementation, Reporting and Follow-Up (NMIRF).

What if waste could create jobs, protect the environment, and support farmers?

In Salima, 27-year-old Jeremiah Mwanza is leading a commercial waste management enterprise that turns municipal waste into organic fertiliser and paving blocks while creating inclusive green jobs.

With support from the Growth Accelerator Entrepreneurship Challenge, co-funded by the German Development Cooperation through KfW Development Bank, the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Lilongwe, and UNDP Malawi, Apocalypse Waste Management Solutions is showing how youth-led solutions can tackle Malawi’s waste crisis and build a cleaner, more sustainable future.

The Malawi Electoral Support Project (MESP) 2025 Annual Report is now available.

In 2025, UNDP Malawi, together with key partners, provided support to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to deliver credible, inclusive and transparent elections. This included working with the UN Women Malawi, the Malawi Police Service (MPS), Centre For Multiparty Democracy (CMD), the Malawi Judiciary, and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to strengthen coordination, participation, and trust in the electoral process.

From enhancing institutional capacity to expanding participation among women and youth, the project contributed to building a more resilient and trusted electoral system.

This progress has been made possible through the generous support of MESP Basket Fund donors: the European Union in Malawi, the UK in Malawi, Ireland in Malawi, the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Lilongwe, Malawi, and the U.S. Embassy Lilongwe.

UNDP Malawi, in partnership with the Malawi Government, through the Inclusive Digital Transformation for Malawi (IDT4M) programme, is proud to share a major milestone in the National Birth Registration Campaign, ensuring that every child in Malawi is counted from day one with a Unique Identification Number.

In Phase One, we supported the National Registration Bureau - Malawi in the training of teachers in Blantyre Rural, Chitipa, Dedza, Likoma, and Machinga who served as birth registration officers, bringing services closer to children and families through a community-focused approach.

A total of 1,108,832 children were registered, representing 98 per cent of the estimated target population.

In Phase Two, we supported the training of teachers in Chiradzulu, Dowa, Nkhata Bay, Zomba Rural, and Zomba Urban who continued this momentum, registering 997,484 children approaching the Phase 2 target of 1.1 million children, representing 91 per cent of the estimated target population.

This progress strengthens Malawi's Civil Registration and Vital Statistics system, advancing the national goal of universal birth registration, a foundation for every child's access to rights, services, and opportunity.

Thanks to our development partners European Union in Malawi, Ireland in Malawi and the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Lilongwe, Malawi.
