We appreciate our ED for criticising the barbaric acts of stealing water pipes and water meters. As concerned parties too, we condemn this behaviour and ask that the perpetrators are serious brought to book!!

Kasungu Civil Society Health Sub-Committee Chairperson Venacio Phwandaphwanda says the theft and vandalism of water pipes and meters is undermining efforts by authorities to provide reliable water services to residents of Kasungu District.

Phwandaphwanda's remarks follow a breakthrough by the police following the arrest of a 28-year-old man suspected to be connected to the theft of water meters, taps, and pipes.

Phwandaphwanda lamented that the continued destruction and theft of critical water infrastructure is threatening public health by compromising water, sanitation, and hygiene services.

Over the weekend, Kasungu Police Deputy Spokesperson Miracle Hauli confirmed the arrest of a 28-year-old man, Peter Tholo, for allegedly vandalising and stealing critical infrastructure belonging to the Central Region Water Board. Police recovered 12 water board meters, 15 taps, and several water pipes during the operation.

Recently, Kasungu Police informed authorities at Kasungu Municipality that between May and July, at least 80 water meters were stolen within Kasungu Municipality alone.

INTRODUCING YET ANOTHER PARTNER IN THE SYNAPSE PROJECT

APODISSI is a Namibian small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) dedicated to fostering knowledge exchange, innovation and technology transfer between Europe and Africa, with offices in Namibia and Nigeria. The organisation has extensive experience in leading the communication, dissemination and exploitation of Erasmus+ and Horizon Europe projects while supporting capacity building across vocational education and training (TVET).

Through the SYNAPSE Project, APODISSI leads the Communication, Dissemination and Impact Work Package and contributes the Smart Step eLearning Platform, an innovative digital learning environment developed through an Erasmus+ project to support lifelong learning, systems thinking and digital skills development.

Margherita Trestini – Managing Director and Communication & Dissemination Lead

Margherita Trestini is an expert in technology transfer, vocational education and training (TVET), capacity building and digital innovation across Europe and Africa. She has extensive experience managing communication, dissemination and stakeholder engagement for European-funded initiatives, including Erasmus+ and Horizon Europe projects.

Her portfolio includes projects such as PRIDA (Policy and Regulation Initiative for Digital Africa), a joint initiative of the African Union (AU), the European Union (EU) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), together with DIGILOGIC, RURALITIES, PrAEctICe, SMART STEP, GreenVETAfrica, SUSTAIN-IT and SYNAPSE. As Managing Director of APODISSI, she provides strategic leadership for communication, dissemination, stakeholder engagement and project management, ensuring that project results achieve maximum visibility, impact and long-term sustainability.

Ina Willibard – Senior Communication and Dissemination Specialist

Ina Willibard leads the implementation of communication, dissemination and stakeholder engagement activities for the SYNAPSE Project in Namibia while supporting the continuous uptake and promotion of the Smart Step eLearning Platform. She coordinates national dissemination activities, monitors communication performance against project key performance indicators (KPIs) and works closely with consortium partners to maximise stakeholder engagement and the visibility of project results.

With more than 27 years of professional experience and 19 years as a soft skills trainer, Ina has extensive expertise in strategic communication, capacity building and entrepreneurship development. Prior to joining APODISSI, she served as Technical Advisor with GIZ Namibia, supporting the National Planning Commission (NPC) in coordinating Namibia’s implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Her experience across both the public and private sectors continues to strengthen APODISSI’s contribution to digital innovation, vocational education and sustainable development.

When asked why the SYNAPSE Project is important to the institution, their response was:

A few weeks ago, we officially joined CHUSDE (Centre for Humanity and Sustainable Development) as interns and the experience has already been truly rewarding.

Since our arrival, we have gained valuable practical knowledge that has complemented what we have learned in the classroom. We have been introduced to organizational communication, project management, monitoring and evaluation, proposal writing, financial reporting, data collection using KoboCollect, questionnaire development, data entry, report writing and community engagement.

These experiences have strengthened our professional skills and broadened our understanding of how development organizations create lasting impact in communities.

We are sincerely grateful to the CHUSDE team for their warm welcome, mentorship and continuous support throughout this journey. Every task and every lesson has contributed to our growth and we look forward to learning even more in the weeks ahead.

SYNAPSE: Empowering Young People to Shape Sustainable Solutions Through Systems Thinking

Today's world is shaped by interconnected challenges. Climate change, unemployment, digital exclusion, inequality, and social vulnerability cannot be solved through isolated actions. They require young people who can understand how these issues are connected and work together to create lasting solutions.

This is the vision behind the SYNAPSE Project (Systems Shift EU - Africa: Empowering Youth through Systems Thinking and Transcontinental Exchange) an international initiative that brings together partners from Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa to strengthen youth leadership, promote intercultural collaboration, and build systems thinking competencies among young people.

The Centre for Humanity and Sustainable Development (CHUSDE) is proud to represent Malawi as a consortium partner in this transformative project. Through SYNAPSE, we are creating opportunities for young people to engage with their peers across continents, exchange knowledge and experiences, and develop practical skills to address the complex challenges affecting their communities.

Over the coming months, CHUSDE will implement activities that promote critical thinking, dialogue, digital learning, leadership development, and collaborative problem-solving. The project will engage young people, youth workers, educators, civil society organisations, and community leaders in building inclusive and sustainable solutions that contribute to local and global development.
