PROGRESS REPORT ON THE ONGOING MWANGWAWILA RIVER PROJECT.

The management of MWAYI is hereby sharing abundant joy with the general public as it is celebrating the new year with great news: our trees/poles have sprouted.(see attached pictures - a forest along the riverbank).

The ongoing project in Mwangawila River has shown remarkable progress. We are really greatful & Happy that different species of trees planted in Mwangawila River, since September 2024, have finally sprouted well with 92% sprouting rate.

Meanwhile, MWAYI is working on replacing the ones that didn't make it in order to maintain uniformity & meet the project goals. This will happen within this month, January 2025, as the rainy season begins.

Otherwise, the management of MWAYI congratulates all MWAYI & community members involved or contributions towards the project for the milestone of progress observed in the project.

PROGRESS AND NEW DEVELOPMENT UNDER THE DEPARTMENTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE AND DISASTER MANAGEMENT.

MWAYI is glad to inform the general public that the project in Mwangwawila river is progressing well. The management of MWAYI is hereby thanking G.V.H. Mwambuli for his unwavering efforts towards each and every project in his area.

This amplifies or magnifies the importance of the project to the communities or villages where the river goes through. This is due to the problems the runoff has been causing in the area: eroding houses and farms along the river.

FYI, he himself, has been in the forefront in the implementation of Mwangwawila river tree planting project. He has also involved his villagers to be part of the project as portrayed in the pictures attached.

Men and women (villagers) have joined MWAYI youths in digging holes, cutting poles and even watering the planted trees or poles. The management of MWAYI is happy and encouraged with G.V.Hs decisions and dedication towards implementation of development projects.

PROGRESS ON MWANGAWILA RIVERBANK RECOVERY AND PROTECTION PROJECT

Good news from the tree (steam) planting project team: planting tree stems inside Mwangwawila river, inorder to block run off water from hitting & eroding the edges or banks of the river, during heavy rains or runoff. The project begun last month , September 2024. It is gradual in nature. As such, it is expected to end once the goal is met.

The team manning the project is hereby to share to the public the progress observed so far. As clearly seen from the pictures attached, the fresh stems which were cut from different tree species, planted into one-metre deep holes, have started sprouting or producing buds. This is indicating the anticipated project outcomes. This achievement is encouraging, empowering, and truly worthy of celebration!

The management of MWAYI would like to congratulate🎉 and encourage the members for he great work. Kudos to all enthusiastic young people working towards contributing a positive effect to the development of their own lives & the communities in and around G.V.H. Mwambuli.

UNDER OUR DEPARTMENTS ENVIRONMENT & CLIMATE CHANGE.

2024/2025 TREE PLANTING EXERCISE.

As a tradition, for Mwambuli Youth Initiative(MWAYI), to plant trees🌳 each rainy⛈️/planting season.

This year (2024/2025) Mwambuli Youth Initiative has prepared to plant more than 10,000 seedlings of different tree🌳 species. Amongst the species, MWAYI will plant
Umbrella Tree, jacaranda, Neem and many exotic trees Later, during planting seasons, the seedlings will be distributed amongst villages & households under G.V. H. Mwambuli.

Meanwhile, MWAYI has started working on the nursery site. So far, as shown in the pictures attached, MWAYI members are clearing the site and electing poles for a fence, protecting the nursery from animals and other destructive agents.

This year, MWAYI will implement this project in partnership with Karonga District Forest Office and Mwambuli Village Development committee. Mr. Mponera, forest officer, together with the youth members, have been on the ground working on the site.

OUR CURRENT PROJECT UNDER THE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT RESTORATION AND DISASTER MANAGEMENT.

As part of redirecting Mwangawila river or protecting its walls from being eroded by the runoff water during rainy seasons, our department of environmental restoration and disaster management has researched and found a simple, safe, practicable and cheaper strategy to meet the goal. This is one way of protecting the environment as well as human beings along the river. Since the river has registered a number of deaths during rainy seasons.

The strategy involves reducing speed and forces from runoff water from hitting the walls of the river with full pressure that weakens the walls hence they corrupt and the soil is washed away. This experiment merely focuses around planting trees inside the river, during this dry season. Trees to be planted are only those that can be propagated using stems/stem cuttings. Looking at the nature of the project/experiment and availability of the type of trees available in the villages to meet the demand, the youths are restless searching for the proper ones.

So far, we have started the project by planting stems of Gliricidia Sepium and other natural and locally available trees that can be propagated through stem cuttings. The stems are being planted 1 metre down the inside of the river, with real soil (Clay Soil) not sand added into the holes and being irrigated every two days.

Once the experiment works, the project will be spread throughout all affected places along the river.

WORD OF THANKS FROM 2024 TREE PLANTING EXERCISE.

MWAYI recognises every effort and assistance receiving from different individuals and entities towards developmental projects. Following that, the management and staff of MWAYI is pleased to acknowledge appreciation to the following and others not mentioned, for their hands in our 2024 tree planting exercise:

1. G.V.H. Mwambuli, for his unwavering support throughout the planting exercise. He opened the exercise by planting the pioneer tree seedling of the year under MWAYI. Also, through his assistants, he mobilised the community to come to MWAYI gardens to collect seedlings for their households tree planting project.

We understand the nature of his job as the G.V.H, with the busy attached to it, but he took his precious to participate in the project acknowledging his eagerness & enthusiasm to development of his area as well as working with developmental related organs newly introduced into his villages. His gestures have been a paramount motivation to the youth of MWAYI and others.

2. Mr. Kondowe (PEA - Ipyana Zone) and Mr. Kasimba (Headteacher - Ipyana Model Primary School) for their professionalism & accomodation during our 2024 Tree Planting Exercise.

Many leaders in many different organs, private and government sectors, block different development projects by sidelining or stopping their subordinates to attend to or participate in different developmental projects like tree planting exercise. To the contrary, Mr. Kondowe and Mr. Kasimba have proven to MWAYI that they are different from other leaders: they love and believe in development of themselves, their subordinates as well as their country. This has been noted from their nature of participation in this project. As MWAYI, we are looking forward to meeting and working with more leaders of this nature, around Karonga district.

Following are pictures of GVH Mwambuli, Mr. Kondowe (PEA) and Mr. Kasimba (Headteacher) & other who participated in 2024 Tree Planting Exercise.

END OF MWAYI 2024 TREE PLANTING EXERCISE.

MWAYI understands the importance of mindset change, particularly early mindset change, towards development of any developmental aspect. As such, MWAYI has already started implementing its projects whilst changing the mindset of the population towards different things including the importance of trees or planting trees.

This approach has been adopted due to the experienced resistance in old people when it comes to importance of planting trees. They dodge such exercises or they only get seedlings and leave them dying at home.

To make sure that this is achieved, during this year's tree planting period, MWAYI has involved a number of schools, beginning from primary school to secondary schools in or nearby Mwambuli Villages. The aim is to teach children, as early as possible, the importance of trees or planting trees.

Amongst the schools the schools benefiting this year, Ipyana Model Primary School is one of them. At Ipyana, MWAYI delivered 180 seedlings of different tree species whereby the majority of them was planted within the school premises. All fruit trees are planted in the school's fruit garden already existing on the campus.

As part of promoting household tree planting approach, the remaining tree seedlings were taken by the staff members and pupils with clear assurance of planting them as physical verification will follow as part of the project since details of the beneficiaries were taken for proper follow up on growth rate and other aspects pertaining to projects.

Following are pictures of MWAYI members, Ipyana staff members and pupils during 2024 tree planting exercise under MWAYI.

Earielr this week, some of our members embarked on Climate Smart Interventions through the provision of different tree seedlings in MWAMBULI VIllage with GVH Mwambuli leading the way by embracing to lead by example.

The GVH, Mwambuli himself, has been the pioneer of our household tree planting exercise. He has planted more than 30 different tree seedlings around his house.

Through this intervention, we have managed to distribute more than 1,500 seedlings to community members in Mwambuli, Luhimbo and other neighbouring villages. This includes churches and schools in or nearby Mwambuli village.

Also, as part of reducing the ongoing soil erosion gullies in Mwangwawira river, we have helped to plant defensive trees alongside the river banks which has been overflowing hence threatening the surrounding communities sheltering sustainability.

The river, Mwangwawira, cuts through the villages of Mwangwawira and Luhimbo before connecting to Lake Malawi.

Earlier this week we incorporated Sodier trees and Ambrella trees adding up to 1,888 trees towards our nursery.

Our tree seedlings are NOT for sale BUT for those looking & budgeted for tree seedlings to buy, will be accommodated at K500 per seedling. This is one way of fundraising and empowering the movement since currently the organ self generate funds for manning all its projects unless.

Those not ready or willing to buy BUT willing to plant & take care of a tree(s), you are also welcome for registration at our office. You will be requesting to provide your name, location, working contact numbers and the type of tree desiring to plant.

After registration, later this month, our youth will visit the registered households, schools and churches to plant the chosen trees and fix some protections around these newly planted seedlings: protecting tree seedlings from animals, people and machines.

The approach will assist our office with the required & related project data base, simultaneously, the records to be taken will help in project monitoring and, calculation and verification of the tree survival rate for all the seedlings prepared by MWAYI.
