FROM GRANTS TO GROWTH: 3 CBOs MAKING PROGRESS IN RUMPHI

An inspiring story of three Community Based Organizations (CBOs) in Rumphi, who each received MK3.5 million business grants from Lusubilo Community Care and are now making meaningful progress through income-generating activities.

Kasonkhwe CBO invested in maize and groundnut farming, cultivating 3.5 acres of maize and 2 acres of groundnuts, with crops showing promising growth for a good harvest.

Junju CBO ventured into Mikolongwe poultry farming for egg and meat production. The group currently has 202 chickens, which are expected to help generate income through the sale of eggs, chicken meat, and manure making.

Phoka CBO is also recording success through broiler chicken farming. In their first phase, the group sold 140 chickens and generated MWK2, 800,000, which has been saved in their bank account. They have already reinvested in the second phase by purchasing 70 chicks, feed and medicine.

Through these businesses, the CBOs are building sustainable sources of income to support school fees, learning materials, and other needs for orphans and vulnerable children, as well as vulnerable households in their communities.

Supporting CBOs is part of Lusubilo Community Care’s interventions under the IOVCY Project, implemented with financial support from the Coppell Family and technical assistance from CRS.

LUSUBILO LIVELIHOOD SUPPORT PROJECT TRANSFORMS THE LIFE OF JOSEPHINE KALAMBO IN KARONGA

In Mwakafyuyu Village, GVH Mwangomba under Traditional Authority Kilupula in Karonga District, 57-year-old Josephine Kalambo, a widow, is rebuilding her life through Lusubilo Community Care’s Livelihood Support Project, implemented with financial support from Manos Unidas from Spain.

When she enrolled in the project in 2025, she received support that gradually transformed her livelihood. This support has equipped her with the knowledge and resources needed to improve her productivity.

The impact of the project has extended beyond the farm. With increased income and active participation in a Savings and Internal Lending Community (SILC), she has significantly improved her household’s living conditions. She has managed to build a house and plans to buy cement to complete the floor after selling this year’s harvest.
