‘’ YOCODESOP’’(Youth Congress for Development and Social Progress) is a youth-focused non-profit in Malawi, based in Dzaleka Refugee Camp, working on issues like education, local development, social integration, health, water & sanitation, etc. with REFUNITE Dzaleka leaders ,
Refunite is an organization that helps reconnect displaced people with their missing families, often by leveraging digital tools and community networks.
Our meeting is part of a collaboration to strengthen community engagement in Dzaleka Refugee Camp.

Purpose and Objectives of the Meeting

From the available reports, the meeting(s) had the following aims:

1. Deepen trust and communication

To foster better relationships between REFUNITE’s leadership and the local refugee community, represented by YOCODESOP.

2. Gather community feedback

To hear from diverse community leaders and members about challenges and needs — especially regarding family tracing, protection, education, and digital access.

3. Tailor service delivery

To adjust REFUNITE’s interventions (e.g. their free mobile platform for reconnecting displaced people) to local realities based on what the community says.

4. Identify local volunteers / ambassadors

Selecting or engaging individuals in the community who can help with outreach, awareness, and implementation of initiatives on the ground.

5. Joint planning and community-led solutions

To move from top-down imposed interventions to ones co-designed with community actors (here, YOCODESOP and other local leaders).

Key Discussion Topics / Themes

While full meeting minutes aren’t in the sources, the reports list some key focus areas discussed:

Family tracing and reunification (i.e. reconnecting displaced persons with missing relatives)
Digital access and communication barriers (challenges in how people can access mobile/digital tools)
Education and protection issues within refugee communities
‘’Community feedback mechanisms’’

— How to continuously involve voices from the camp in decision-making

Outcomes and Benefits (Reported / Expected)

From what is publicly shared:

‘’Greater - alignment’’ between what REFUNITE offers and what the community actually needs. Strengthened ‘’ownership’’: having local volunteers increases sustainability and trust.
‘’ Better ‘’communication channels’’: the meetings help refine how information flows between REFUNITE, YOCODESOP, and community members.
‘’ Enhanced ‘’community engagement’’ in planning, which tends to lead to more relevant, acceptable, and effective initiatives.

My brothers and sisters, today I want to talk about something that affects the health of our whole community: stagnant water.

Stagnant water means water that does not move. It collects in open containers, puddles, ditches, and tanks that are not covered. This water may look harmless, but it is dangerous.

Mosquitoes lay eggs in it and spread diseases like malaria and dengue. Germs and bacteria grow in it, causing diarrhea, stomach sickness, and skin infections. It also attracts flies and rats and makes our surroundings smell bad.

But together, we can stop this danger. Let us remove standing water from around our shelters. Let us cover all stored water. Let us fill holes where rainwater gathers, and keep our environment clean. At night, we should sleep under mosquito nets and protect our children.

When we take these small steps, we protect not only ourselves but the whole community. Clean water and a clean environment mean healthy families. Together, we can prevent disease and live in a safer place.

REFUNITE leader’s team in Dzaleka Refugee camp has been conducting a series of meetings with Yocodesop_Association, Malawi, as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen communication, trust, and collaboration with the refugee population.

The purpose of these meetings is to:

Engage directly with leaders from various national, ethnic, and interest-based groups within the camp.
Understand the needs, challenges, and concerns faced by different communities, especially in areas such as family tracing, digital access, education, and protection.

Raise awareness about REFUNITE’s services, particularly its free mobile-based family tracing and reconnection platform, which helps displaced people find and communicate with missing loved ones.
Co-create solutions and outreach strategies by involving leaders as bridges between REFUNITE and the broader refugee community.

During these sessions, REFUNITE also gathers feedback on existing programs, discusses barriers to some important topic. (such as access to phones, internet, or digital literacy etc.), and identifies community volunteers who can support ongoing engagement and training efforts.

These meetings are essential for building inclusive, community-led humanitarian responses, ensuring that the most vulnerable populations are heard and that programs are tailored to their specific context.

02/05/2025

In Dzaleka Refugee Camp and surrounding villages in Dowa District, Malawi, access to clean and sufficient water is a serious and growing concern. The camp, originally built for 10,000–12,000 people, now hosts over 50,000 refugees. This overcrowding has placed a tremendous burden on basic infrastructure, especially water supply systems, including low-capacity boreholes and manual water pumps.

The majority of the water points in and around Dzaleka are manual borehole pumps —simple hand-operated systems. With tens of thousands depending on them daily, these pumps frequently:
- Break down due to overuse.
- Deliver insufficient water, especially during dry seasons.
- Require long queues (often hours-long) to fetch just a few liters.

Health and Sanitation Risks
Limited water means:
- Poor hygiene and increased risk of diseases like cholera, diarrhea, and skin infections.
- Girls and women often miss school or face dangers walking long distances for water.

Message from the humanitarian people or son nonprofit who need to join YOCODESOP to fight this challenges.

Water is life, yet here, it is a daily struggle. We at YOCODESOP witness firsthand how lack of clean water affects children, families, and hopes. We urge international partners to stand with us. Let’s build solutions that last—for the camp and for the communities that host us."*
