Our Executive Director, Ulanda Mtamba, joined students and graduates at the University Dream Business Summit 2026, held at Golden Peacock in Blantyre, for conversations around entrepreneurship, building dreams, navigating challenges and taking care of mental health along the way.

Because empowerment isn't just about where young people want to go, but also about ensuring they have the support and tools to navigate the journey.

National AIDS Commission (NAC) says Malawi has made significant progress in HIV management but there is a need to take further steps towards developing an HIV cure and vaccine which will help achieve the goal of ending the epidemic.

The remarks were made on Tuesday in Lilongwe during a meeting on the National HIV Cure Stakeholder Dialogue organised by NAC in partnership with the International AIDS Society (IAS) and AVAC.

In an interview with Mlimi Radio, NAC Acting Chief Executive Officer Tione Chilambe said although current HIV treatment helps control the virus, it does not completely eliminate it from the body.

She attributed that HIV can remain dormant in reservoirs within immune cells and tissues, including the gut and bone marrow, and begin multiplying again when a person stops taking antiretroviral therapy (ART) hence the need to develop a cure that can completely eliminate HIV from the body.

"Malawi's participation in global research initiatives, in collaboration with major research institutions, is crucial in ensuring that the country is represented in scientific studies and the findings address its specific needs,"said Chilambe.

Chilambe expressed optimism about the future of HIV research, citing on growing number of people who have been reported to have achieved HIV remission or been cured under specific circumstances.

Currently there is no definite timeline for the development of an HIV cure or vaccine as the research is ongoing.

What does the future of HIV cure and vaccine research look like, and who should be part of shaping it?

Today, stakeholders have come together in Lilongwe for the National HIV Cure Research Dialogue led by the National AIDS Commission in partnership with the International AIDS Society (IAS) and AVAC.

The dialogue brings together organisations including the Ministry of Health (MoH), UNC Project Malawi, NAC, MANASO, UNAIDS, WHO, Generational Empowerment Movement, Y+ Malawi, COWLHA and Lighthouse Trust, among others.

The discussions are exploring Malawi's HIV cure research landscape, opportunities for future collaboration, and priorities for advancing the national HIV cure research agenda.

Community voices matter in these conversations, too. Young people and the communities affected by HIV should have opportunities to understand the research, ask questions, and contribute their perspectives as Malawi considers the future of HIV cure research.

HIV prevention information should reach everyone, without barriers.

Our HIV prevention advocate Chisomo Chiwala recently engaged 22 members of the Malawi National Association of the Deaf - MANAD Blantyre branch in a conversation about HIV prevention options, including condoms, oral PrEP, injectable PrEP, PEP, lenacapavir (LEN) and the PrEP ring.

The session highlighted the importance of making health information accessible so that Deaf community can learn about HIV prevention and make informed decisions about their health.

No one should be left behind when it comes to HIV prevention. Accessible health information is a right, not a privilege.
