🎉 Happy International Day of Persons with Disabilities! 🌍

Today, we join the world in celebrating the resilience, strength, and achievements of persons with disabilities. This year's theme, "Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future," emphasizes the importance of creating a better, more equitable society for everyone.

As we mark the end of Disability Rights Awareness Month, we reflect on our progress in championing the rights of persons with disabilities and acknowledge the work that still lies ahead. Together, let’s continue breaking barriers, challenging stereotypes, and promoting equal opportunities.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all organisations of persons with disabilities, advocates, and allies who have contributed to making this month impactful and inspiring. Your contributions are paving the way for a more inclusive Malawi.

Let’s keep the momentum going—every day is an opportunity to stand for inclusion and equality. Together, we can build a world where no one is left behind.

PODCAM AND FEDOMA JOIN FORCES TO REVIVE BLANTYRE DDF
The Parents of Disabled Children Association of Malawi (PODCAM) and Federation of Disability Organisations in Malawi (FEDOMA) have taken a significant step towards empowering persons with disabilities in Blantyre district by reviving the District Disability Forum (DDF) with support from Amplified Change through electing a new committee.
Speaking after the elections, the Executive Director for PODCAM, Lyness Manduwa, highlighted the importance of reviving the forum, saying they are ambassadors of their fellow persons with disabilities.
“As an affiliate of FEDOMA, we recognise the need for a strong voice to represent the interests of persons with disabilities in the council’s development; hence, persons with disabilities are not left out in development activities,” explained Manduwa.
Commenting on the same, the Federation of Disability Organisations Association of Malawi (FEDOMA) Programmes Manager Ethel Kachala emphasised the crucial role of DDFs in advocating for equal opportunities and inclusion of persons with disabilities at the district level.
Kachala said Blantyre district has lacked a dedicated platform to represent the interests of persons with disabilities at the council level for a long time.
“We are excited to revive the DDF through elections and successive training conducted by PODCAM which is a step ahead in fighting for the rights of persons with disabilities,” explained Kachala.
In his remarks, the newly elected Chairperson Dalitso Michael Gumbayera expressed his excitement saying this will amplify the voices of persons with disabilities and ensure their needs are prioritised in local development planning and decision-making processes.
