Happy World Mental Health Day!

Today, we reflect on the power of sharing our stories and making space for others to be heard.

Through the Two Worlds, One Story project, students from the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences- MUBAS and young people from the Netherlands came together to co-create visual stories exploring bullying and mental health.

Yesterday, the wider MUBAS community had the opportunity to engage with these stories, hear the experiences behind them, and reflect on the impact bullying can have on people’s lives.

The project is a reminder that, although our experiences may differ, listening to one another can help us build understanding, empathy, and connection.

Let us keep creating spaces where people feel safe to share their experiences and know that their voices matter.

The kind of energy we want to carry into the week is the energy of purpose, commitment, and collective action. 🌱

At the Kalitsiro Community Hub, the women participating in our Amayi Patsogolo Project are putting that spirit into action, working together on the farm to strengthen their livelihoods and support their families.

Through the project, we are also supporting mothers and caregivers to build their knowledge and capacity to promote the mental wellbeing of their families and young people in the community.

This work complements the Kalitsiro GenWell Club, a youth-led space where young people from the surrounding villages come together to talk about mental health, build supportive relationships, and find solutions to challenges affecting their wellbeing.

When mothers, caregivers, and young people are supported to play their part, they can build stronger and more supportive communities. 💚

Here is to purpose, collective action, and creating spaces where families and young people can thrive. 🥂

Behind a young person's wellbeing is often a whole network of people who care.

Families and caregivers are part of that network. Supporting them with the knowledge and skills to respond to mental health needs can strengthen the support available to young people too.

That is the thinking behind Amayi Patsogolo, meaning Women Forward. In Kalitsiro Village, Mpemba, Blantyre Rural, we are working with mothers and guardians on mental health support, alongside financial literacy and group-led income-generating activities.

When we strengthen the people around young people, we strengthen the support available to them too.

On Friday, last week, we participated in the Scientific Showcasing Event at Millennium University in Blantyre, held under the theme "Securing Holistic Wellness Through Scientific Cooperation in Mental Health Interventions & Research."

The event was graced by high-level officials from the African Academy of Sciences, the European Union, the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD), the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), the Deputy Minister of Education, Hon. Francis Folley, Ministry of Health representatives, and other development stakeholders.

The event laid bare the importance of generating and translating evidence into action, something we found deeply impactful to our work as we bridge the gap between evidence and action.

One of the most compelling takeaways from the session was the evidence supporting low-cost approaches to promoting mental health and well-being in resource-constrained environments like the one we work in.
