Peer educators from T/A Amidu and T/A Kalembo have begun day one of sessions covering Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), HIV prevention services, positive living, linkage to care and treatment, and mental health. They are also being equipped with skills that will help them engage their fellow youths in their respective communities.

Local non-governmental organisation Emmanuel International, in partnership with the Centre for Alternatives for Victimised Women and Children (CAVWOC), has trained stakeholders in Mulanje District on the use of newly provided tablets and computers.

Country Director for Emmanuel International, Charles Mukiwa, said the initiative, implemented under the Titukule Azimayi Programme, will improve efficiency, accuracy and the timely submission of gender-based violence reports.

He said digitising the reporting process will strengthen data management, reduce paperwork and help stakeholders track cases more effectively.

Director of Economic Planning and Development for Mulanje District Council, Morson Magombo, welcomed the initiative, saying efforts to reduce gender-based violence are key to the district’s development.

Cases on gender-based violence have jumped from around 20,800 in 2022 to at least 25,000 at the close of year 2025.

Deputy director of gender affairs in the Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability Affairs, Ronald Phiri, says major victims remain women and children, urging stakeholders to unite to reverse the trend.

Phiri said this today when Emmanuel International in partnership with CAVWOC with support from Global Affairs Canada donated tablets and computers to stakeholders aimed at enhancing reporting and data collection regarding GBV.

Phalombe District Director of Planning and Development, Kelvin Harawa, lauded the organization for the initiative, adding that the digital referral and reporting system is a plus in combating gender based violence in the district.

District Coordinator for Emmanuel International under Titukule Azimayi project, Catherine Chirambo, says paper-based reporting faced challenges in reporting cases of GBV which affected management of the vice in the district.

CAVWOC has joined district stakeholders in Phalombe for a training aimed at strengthening how Gender-Based Violence (GBV) cases are documented, referred, and followed up within communities.

The training, organized by Emmanuel International Malawi in partnership with CAVWOC under the Titukule Azimayi Project, with support from Global Affairs Canada and Emmanuel International Canada, brings together District and Community Referral Focal Persons. Participants are being oriented on GBV documentation, referral pathways, reporting, and the use of the Digital Referral and Reporting System (DRRS), which is expected to improve coordination among service providers and strengthen case tracking and referrals for survivors.

The session was also attended by the District Commissioner for Phalombe, Mr. Yobu Makina Gama.

In his remarks, the Director of Planning and Development (DPD) for Phalombe District Council said the district already has plans aimed at reducing the prevalence of GBV. However, he noted that implementation of these plans is often affected by limited resources. He commended Emmanuel International for organizing the training, saying the district stands to benefit from strengthened capacity among those responsible for handling GBV cases.

The training also created space for stakeholders to reflect on challenges affecting GBV reporting and coordination. Participants discussed some of the gaps that affect case documentation and referrals, while exploring practical ways of improving collaboration among actors responding to GBV.

Speaking during the training, the Deputy Director in the Ministry of Gender, Disability and Social Welfare, Mr. Ronald Phiri, emphasized the importance of effective referrals and documentation, stating, “Every referral made represents a life that needs support and justice, we are thankful for the training in the Digital Referral and Reporting System. To the participants, you are the torch bearers, make sure you amplify the learning of this DRRS beyond these walls.”
