Meet female chief Katchera T/A Njewa, Filipina Felias a passionate female chief championing the protection of adolescent girls and young women in her community.

Through the Safe Space Mentorship Program under the TEENS Project, she has become a strong voice against child marriage, proving that meaningful change in rural Malawi begins when chiefs stand alongside girls. Her leadership is helping transform harmful norms into opportunities for girls to stay in school, speak out, and protect their futures. In many rural communities, chiefs remain the custodians of culture, beliefs, and community values, making their involvement essential in the fight to end child marriage.

Recognizing this, Girls Empowerment Network has intentionally worked to bridge the gap between adolescent girls and traditional leaders by creating safe platforms for dialogue, mentorship, advocacy, and collective action. This connection has strengthened trust within communities and empowered girls to confidently engage with leaders on issues affecting their lives, including child marriage, teen pregnancy, and gender-based violence.
GENET’s approach of working hand in hand with traditional leaders is helping build communities where girls are valued, safeguarded, and given the opportunity to thrive beyond harmful cultural practices.

The journey has officially begun!

Families in T/A Chadza, Lilongwe, have started participating in the Moyo Olemekezeka Empowerment Sessions, under the Pamodzi Kuthetsa Nkhanza (PKN) consortium, marking an important step towards building stronger, more resilient, and empowered communities. The excitement, openness, and commitment shown by participants reflect a shared willingness to learn, grow, and support one another throughout this journey.

Through these sessions, families are gaining knowledge, practical life skills, and support aimed at promoting dignity, positive relationships, and lasting change within their homes and communities.

We are encouraged by the positive start and look forward to continuing this journey together towards safer, stronger, and more hopeful families.

The PKN Project is implemented by a consortium comprising the Girls Empowerment Network, Women's Legal Resources Centre - WOLREC and Human Rights for Women and Girls with Disabilities in Malawi - hrwgdm, and is funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office under the What Works to Prevent Violence Programme.

As we commemorate Kamuzu Day, we honour Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda whose words continue to remind us of the strength and potential that lies within each of us: “You are afraid because you don’t know what you are capable of.”

We believe every girl deserves the confidence, support, and opportunity to realize her full potential and contribute to her community and the nation.

Midweek reminder

In the middle of all the work, deadlines, and responsibilities, don’t forget to pause, breathe, and appreciate how far you have come. Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is give yourself a moment to smile.

Menstrual Hygiene Management is more than just access to pads! it is about dignity, protection, confidence, and keeping girls safe and in school

In Chiseka, girls and young women are courageously speaking out on the realities they face after starting their periods, where many are expected to provide their own pads, soap, and underwear. For some girls, this pressure increases vulnerability to risky relationships, teen pregnancies, and child marriages.

Through mentorship and Safe Spaces, girls are now turning challenges into opportunities. They are sewing reusable pads, running group businesses, building confidence, and leading change in their communities. The girls have also conducted 15 community dialogues with parents and community members on menstrual hygiene, teen pregnancies, and child marriages creating positive conversations and community support for girls.
As Girls Empowerment Network we celebrate the power of mentorship, safe spaces, and girls who are boldly protecting their futures.

Every girl should have the chance to imagine a future she chooses for herself.
Yet too many girls still face barriers like child marriage that limit their potential.

At GENET, we are working with communities to empower and protect girls’ rights, promote positive social norms, and ensure every girl has the opportunity to grow, learn, and thrive.

This week, let’s stand together to protect her dreams, because every girl’s future matters.

What you do matters.

The work you do each day, the people you support, and the quiet contributions that often go unseen all make a difference.

This Labour Day, we recognize and celebrate every worker, every caregiver, and every individual who continues to show up and give their best.

At Girls Empowerment Network (GENET), we know that your commitment is helping shape a future where every girl is protected, empowered, and given the opportunity to succeed.

Tag someone you appreciate. Let them know their work is seen
