Tibe Khonde welcomes the Ministerial Statements during the sitting of Parliament!!!

MEN’S MENTAL HEALTH REQUIRES URGENT ACTION

As Parliament rises, the call for greater investment in mental health and psychosocial support services must not rise with it.

During the sitting, Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare, Hon. Mary Navicha, urged Parliament and all stakeholders to strengthen support for mental health, while describing the frequent cases of su***de in Malawi as a national concern requiring urgent action.

At Tibe Khonde Mental Health Initiative, we welcome this call. Men are often expected to remain strong in silence, yet many are struggling with depression, stress, financial pressures, relationship challenges and other difficulties behind closed doors.

We must create safe spaces where men can talk, seek help and be supported without shame or judgement.

Mental health is not a weakness. Asking for help is a sign of courage.

Let us move beyond conversations and invest in accessible, community-based mental health and psychosocial support services especially for men and communities in rural Malawi.

No man should walk alone in his mental health journey.

Wednesday Insights!!!

YOUR LIFE IS NOT A COURT ROOM WHERE YOU MUST DEFEND YOUR ABILITY.

Some people will place limits on you based on what they think you can achieve.

They will tell you what you cannot do, how far you cannot go and sometimes even who you cannot become. But one of the biggest mistakes you can make is to spend your life trying to prove them wrong.

You do not have to destroy yourself to prove that you are capable. Work within your means. Move at your own pace. Build quietly and consistently. Let your progress speak for you. The truth is, some people will remain negative towards you regardless of how much you accomplish. Even when they see you succeed, they may find another reason to discredit your achievement. Not because you have failed, but because they had already made up their minds about you.

Do not make their approval, the measure of your worth. You don't need to exhaust yourself trying to convince someone who is committed to misunderstanding you.

Your life is not a courtroom where you must constantly defend your ability.

Sometimes, the most powerful response to those who underestimated you is not an argument. It is becoming everything you were meant to become without destroying yourself in the process.

Do not shift the blame. Accept your situation, accept the consequences and open your heart to healing. Where possible, ask for forgiveness too!!!.

Acceptance is never easy. It can be painful, humbling and uncomfortable. But the moment you stop fighting reality and begin to accept where you are, you take the first and most important step toward healing and recovery. I know this because I lived it.

When I went through one of the darkest seasons of my life in 2024, I chose to accept my situation instead of denying it or blaming others. I also asked for forgiveness where necessary. That decision did not remove the pain overnight, but it marked the beginning of my journey toward healing, restoration, and purpose.

That healing gave birth to Tibe Khonde Mental Health.

Acceptance is not surrender; it is the foundation of recovery. The day you accept your reality is the day you position yourself to grow beyond it. Healing begins with acceptance.

Be Careful Who You Open Up To.

We live in a world where some people genuinely care, while others only appear to.

Not everyone who offers a listening ear has your best interests at heart. There are people whose goal is not to help you heal or walk towards freedom, but to gather the details of your struggles. They want to be the first to know your story so they can discuss it in their circles, satisfy their curiosity or use your vulnerability to their advantage.

When trust is betrayed, the emotional pain can become even deeper than the original struggle. Sadly, some people have not only battled depression or anxiety, they have also carried the heavy burden of betrayal, gossip, judgment and disappointment from those they trusted.

Opening up is an important step towards healing, but wisdom is equally important. Speak up but speak wisely. Seek help but seek it from people who will protect your dignity, guard your confidence and walk with you on your journey towards healing and hope.

Breaking Myths, Restoring Hope: Traditional Leaders Advancing Mental Health in Rural Malawi.

Myths, misconceptions and deeply rooted cultural beliefs continue to distort the understanding of mental health, preventing many people from seeking timely help. These misconceptions often lead to stigma, discrimination and unnecessary suffering for individuals and families living with mental health conditions.

At Tibe Khonde Mental Health, we believe that changing this narrative begins within our communities. We are encouraged by the growing partnership with traditional leaders, who are playing a vital role in promoting mental health awareness, challenging harmful beliefs and referring people in need of professional support.

Between June and July, Tibe Khonde Mental Health has attended to 39 mental health related cases referred by traditional leaders from Mulanje, Thyolo, Ntcheu, Mzimba, Dowa, Blantyre, Thyolo and Chitipa.

This demonstrates the critical role that community leadership can play in ensuring that no one is left behind.

Together with traditional leaders, communities and partners, we are building a Malawi where mental health is understood, stigma is reduced and seeking help is recognised as a sign of strength not weakness.

Responding to Men in Need of Mental Health Services in Rural Mulanje

For the past three days, the Tibe Khonde Mental Health team has been conducting an outreach across hard-to-reach communities in Mulanje District, including Limbuli, Lujeri, Minimini, Bondo, Mathambi and surrounding tea estate communities.

Our mission was to follow up with men who had reached out for support and ensure that no one seeking help was left behind. During this outreach, we successfully traced and visited 27 men who had sought Tibe Khonde Mental Health services. We listened to their stories, shared words of hope, provided psychosocial support and linked them to the help they need.

Above all, we celebrated their courage. Speaking openly about mental health is never easy, and every man who chose to share his experiences demonstrated remarkable strength and resilience.

The journey also reminded us of the realities faced by many rural communities. Several villages were extremely difficult to access, with roads unsuitable for vehicles. To reach those in need, we relied on a motorcycle, travelling across rough terrain because we believe that distance should never be a barrier to mental health care.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Inspector Franco Kasiya, Community Policing Coordinator at Mulanje Police Station, for his unwavering support and companionship throughout the outreach.
