On 9th April 2026, Kachere Progressive Women’s Group, with support from AmplifyChange, conducted a capacity-building session with the Nsanje District Health Management Team (DHMT).
The session focused on Comprehensive Abortion Care (CAC), Safe Abortion Access, and Post-Abortion Care (PAC), aiming to strengthen knowledge and service delivery among health professionals in the district.
Among the facilitators was Counsel Mateyu Sisya, who provided detailed insights into the Gender Equality Act, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) policy, and relevant case law, highlighting the legal and policy framework governing abortion care in Malawi.
Speaking in Nsanje after engaging health authorities at Nsanje District Hospital Office (DHO), Kachere Progressive Women’s Group Executive Director, Malango Maganga, said the organization has partnered with other civil society organizations to advocate for the reintroduction of the Termination of Pregnancy Bill in Parliament.
Maganga noted that once the bill is enacted into law, it will play a crucial role in reducing maternal deaths caused by unsafe abortions, while also saving public health resources.
In his remarks, Nsanje DHO Health Promotion Officer, George Mbotwa, acknowledged that the district continues to record a significant number of women and girls seeking post-abortion care, underscoring the need for strengthened interventions and policy support.
