On 9th April 2026, Kachere Progressive Women’s Group, with support from AmplifyChange, conducted a capacity-building session with the Nsanje District Health Management Team (DHMT).
The session focused on Comprehensive Abortion Care (CAC), Safe Abortion Access, and Post-Abortion Care (PAC), aiming to strengthen knowledge and service delivery among health professionals in the district.

Among the facilitators was Counsel Mateyu Sisya, who provided detailed insights into the Gender Equality Act, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) policy, and relevant case law, highlighting the legal and policy framework governing abortion care in Malawi.

Speaking in Nsanje after engaging health authorities at Nsanje District Hospital Office (DHO), Kachere Progressive Women’s Group Executive Director, Malango Maganga, said the organization has partnered with other civil society organizations to advocate for the reintroduction of the Termination of Pregnancy Bill in Parliament.

Maganga noted that once the bill is enacted into law, it will play a crucial role in reducing maternal deaths caused by unsafe abortions, while also saving public health resources.

In his remarks, Nsanje DHO Health Promotion Officer, George Mbotwa, acknowledged that the district continues to record a significant number of women and girls seeking post-abortion care, underscoring the need for strengthened interventions and policy support.

On 20th March 2026, a one-day media training was successfully conducted at Nsanje DHO conference. The training brought together journalists and social media influencers with the aim of strengthening their capacity to report accurately and responsibly on issues related to access to safe abortion .

Our facilitator George Mbotwa ,DHPO delivered a presentation on the role of the media in reporting SRHR issues, particularly access to safe abortion. He emphasized ethical reporting, accuracy, and the importance of using media as a tool to educate communities and reduce stigma.

Edna Maloya provided an in-depth presentation on Malawi’s abortion laws. She explained the current legal position and highlighted the conditions under which abortion is permitted. Her session helped clarify misconceptions and equipped participants with factual legal knowledge.

Meanwhile Judith Mgogo presented statistics from 2025, highlighting the prevalence of abortion cases and their impact on women. She emphasized that unsafe abortion remains a significant public health concern affecting many women.
