📢Advocacy in Motion: Nyale Institute Takes on Mulanje

From 22-27 June 2026, Nyale Institute for Sexual and Reproductive Health Governance will be in Mulanje District implementing a week of activities under the Mwana Wa Mzako Ngwako Yemwe Campaign to strengthen youth-led advocacy and promote Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).

During the week, we will:
• Conduct a five-day training for young people using the Chichewa version of the SRHR Advocacy Manual to build knowledge and practical skills in advocacy, communication, and community mobilisation.
• Hold a stakeholder review and dissemination meeting with district-level stakeholders to reflect on project progress and share findings from the Comprehensive Abortion Care Research conducted in Mulanje.
• Host a community outreach event led by Senior Chief Chikumbu and the Girls' Reproductive Justice Ambassador to raise awareness on SRHR, promote positive community attitudes, and encourage collective action for the health and wellbeing of girls and young women.

Through these activities, Nyale Institute is working to empower young people as advocates for change, strengthen collaboration with leaders and stakeholders, and promote access to accurate SRHR information and services.

Together, we can build communities where every young person is informed, empowered, and able to make decisions about their health and future.

PRESS STATEMENT | Nyale Institute

Nyale Institute has issued a statement following the sentencing of a woman in an abortion-related case in Nkhata Bay. The case highlights important questions about Malawi’s current legal framework on abortion and the need for laws that are clear, fair, and consistent with constitutional and human rights principles.

We call for a review of the legal framework governing reproductive healthcare to ensure greater legal clarity for girls, women, healthcare providers, law enforcement agencies, and the courts.

Today, Nyale Institute appeared before the court in a case that raises important questions about the application of Section 138 of the Penal Code and the balance between child protection and fairness in the law.

While protecting children from abuse and exploitation must remain a priority, we believe there is room for discussion on whether the current legal framework adequately distinguishes between exploitative conduct and relationships involving young people who are close in age.

Nyale Institute in partnership with the University of Malawi Students Law Society (SLS) is proud to support the release of a Special Edition Journal titled “Putting Malawi First: Advancing Gender Equality and SRHR for Sustainable Development.”

The journal provides thoughtful analysis on critical gender and social justice issues affecting Malawi, including gender-based violence, women in corporate governance, masculinities, and other emerging conversations shaping sustainable development.

This publication reflects the importance of youth leadership, academic engagement, and informed dialogue in advancing gender equality and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).

Special thanks to Mr. Temwa Chipaza for coordinating this work on behalf of Nyale Institute and supporting the successful collaboration with the Students Law Society.

At Nyale Institute, we remain committed to creating platforms that amplify young voices, promote critical thinking, and contribute to a more inclusive and equitable Malawi.

Community Dialogue on Women’s Reproductive Rights

Nyale Institute recently hosted an interactive panel discussion in Mulanje to raise awareness on women’s reproductive rights and unpack the implications of the AC (a Minor) case.

The discussion brought together community leaders, youth representatives, health workers, police, religious leaders and other stakeholders to share perspectives, ask questions, and explore how communities can better support girls and women.

Together, we continue to promote informed dialogue, challenge stigma, and strengthen community support for reproductive rights.

📢 New Publication

A court judgment is not the end — it’s the just the beginning of change.

Nyale Institute has released an Issues Paper on AC (a Minor) — a landmark ruling affirming the right of child survivors of sexual violence to access safe abortion in Malawi.
But barriers remain to ensure access to services
This paper highlights:
✔️ Gaps in implementation
✔️ Legal and policy challenges
✔️ Practical steps for action
The focus now is clear: turning legal rights into real access.
