Working with women and girls has taught us that leadership often means wearing many hats.

There are days when young women come to us with deeply personal challenges some requiring legal support, others medical attention and many needing psychosocial care.

We had the opportunity to attend a training organised by FACT Malawi on their project Strategic Litigation to Advance SRHR for Adolescent Girls and Young Women.

The training brought together legal professionals, Malawi Police Service officers-Victim Support Unit, medical personnel, the Blantyre District Youth Office and youth leaders across Blantyre district .

This experience was a reflection of the realities we encounter in our communities. It deepened our understanding of the issues many girls and women face and strengthened our ability to respond more effectively, responsibly and collaboratively.

Breaking the Pattern

For many young mothers in Malawi, the pattern is painfully familiar: leaving school early, setting aside dreams and believing that opportunity has passed.

But one young mother at Women and Girls for Technology chose a different path.

Instead of accepting the limits placed on her, she stepped into a learning space, determined to grow and rediscover her potential. What started with uncertainty slowly turned into confidence as she engaged in learning, explored technology and realized that her future could still be shaped by her own ambitions.

Her journey reminds us that the pattern does not have to continue.

By choosing to learn again and believe in herself again, she is not only transforming her own life she is showing her child and her community that new beginnings are always possible.

This is what breaking the pattern looks like.

This International Women’s Day, we reflect on the theme Breaking the Pattern.

For many women and girls in Malawi, the pattern is written by society and culture long before they get the chance to define it for themselves.

Women and Girls For Technology is overcoming predetermined patterns by creating spaces where women and girls can explore technology, innovation and leadership through mentorship.

One of the most powerful examples of breaking the pattern comes from the young mothers in our program.

Many were expected to stop dreaming when they became mothers while still in school. Society often tells them their journey ends there.

Instead, they chose a different path. They returned to learning, stepped into technology spaces, rebuilt confidence and discovered new possibilities for their futures.

Their courage is not only changing their lives ,it is shaping the futures of their children and inspiring other women and girls in their communities to believe that their story is not over.

At Women and Girls for Technology, we believe empowerment is not only about opening doors for girls at the beginning of their journeys, but also about creating second chances for women and young mothers who are ready to rise again.

Breaking the pattern means ensuring that every woman and girl, regardless of where her story began, has the opportunity to learn, innovate and lead.
