Technology is often weaponized in Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), creating invisible chains of control. From GPS tracking to monitoring messages, tech facilitates stalking and coercion. Recognizing the signs of this digital control is crucial , it is a severe form of psychological violence and psychological abuse.

In the digital communities of Malawi, we all have a role to play in fostering a safe space. When you encounter online abuse—whether it targets gender, political views, or tribal identity—don't be a passive observer.

Stand up for our digital unity:

Report the Harm: Use platform tools to report content that violates safety guidelines.

Offer Support: Leave comments of encouragement and support for those being targeted. Let them know they are seen and valued.

Refuse to Amplify: Do not share, quote, or engage with hateful content, stopping its spread across Malawian social media.

Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV) is a major threat, and existing laws, like the Electronic Transactions and Cyber Security Act and the Data Protection Act 2024, are often inadequate to address the specific harm and privacy violations faced by survivors. Malawi's Data Protection Act, 2024, helps significantly by giving victims the Right to Erasure and the Right to Object . It also provides enhanced protection of sensitive data. Despite this major win for privacy, Malawi still needs dedicated, survivor-centered legislation to criminalize all forms of TFGBV as distinct acts of gender-based violence, ensuring the law focuses on the perpetrator's crime, not the victim's modesty.

La violence basée sur le genre facilitée par la technologie (VBGFT) est une menace majeure, et les lois existantes , comme la lois sur les transactions életronoques et la cybersécurité et la lois sur protection des données de 2024,sont souvent insuffisantes pour traiter les préjudices spécifiques et les violations de la vie privée subis par survivants.La lois sur la protection des données de 2024 au Malawi constitue un progrès important en donnant aux victimes le droit à l'effacement et le droit d'opposition. Elle offre égalememt une protection renforcée des données sensibles. Malgré cette avancée majeure pour la vie privée,le Malawi a encore besoin d'une législation dédiée , centrée sur les survivants,pour incriminer toutes les formes de VBGTF en tant qu'actes distincts de violence basée sur le genre,en veillant à ce que la loi se concentre sur le crime du délinquant et non sur la pudeur de la victime.

Misogyny is the hatred, dislike, or prejudice against women and girls. Globally, networks like the "manosphere" fuel this, driving online harassment that directly impacts the safety and potential of Malawian women. This digital threat undermines key national goals. It actively works to hinder women's economic empowerment and perpetuate existing gender imbalances in education and leadership—issues that the National Gender Policy seeks to address.

La misogynie est la haine, l'aversion ou les préjugés envers les femmes et les filles. À l'échelle mondiale, des réseaux comme la « manosphère » alimentent ce phénomène, favorisant le harcèlement en ligne qui compromet directement la sécurité et le potentiel des Malawiennes. Cette menace numérique sape les objectifs nationaux fondamentaux. Elle entrave activement l'autonomisation économique des femmes et perpétue les inégalités de genre existantes dans l'éducation et les postes de direction – des problèmes que la Politique nationale d'égalité des sexes vise à résoudre.

As we observe 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, we must address the rising threat of digital abuse, including AI-Generated Abuse (Deepfakes) . A study on Cyber Violence Against Women (CVAW) in Malawi by Donald Malanga (2021) reveals that digital violence is pervasive and on the rise.Women surveyed commonly experienced cyber stalking , cyber bullying, and online sexual exploitation. This violence has severe consequences, including loss of income and survivors living in a state of fear . We must unite to end digital violence and advocate for legal protections and a safer online environment.

Alors que nous observons les 16 jours d'activisme contre les violences sexistes, nous devons lutter contre la menace croissante des violences numériques, notamment celles générées par l'IA (deepfakes). Une étude sur les cyberviolences faites aux femmes au Malawi, menée par Donald Malanga (2021), révèle que ces violences sont omniprésentes et en constante augmentation. Les femmes interrogées ont fréquemment été victimes de cyberharcèlement, de cyberintimidation et d'exploitation sexuelle en ligne. Ces violences ont de graves conséquences, telles que la perte de revenus et un climat de peur permanent pour les victimes. Nous devons nous unir pour mettre fin aux violences numériques et plaider en faveur de protections juridiques et d'un environnement en ligne plus sûr.
