Youths with spina bifida and hydrocephalus took a pose after at House of Hope after a training.
House of Hope is a home for persons and parents of spina bifida and hydrocephalus (SBH) persons in the southern region. It is situated five (5) km away from Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH), a major referral hospital for the southern region of Malawi.
We use the house to accommodate patients that are awaiting hospital appointments at QECH. More often, we have SBH patients that have been discharged from the central hospital requiring a hospital review in two weeks but can't manage to go and return within that short period because of transport. We keep them there and give them food everyday.
We also have patients that do come from very far away areas for appointments at QECH and they can't arrive on the same day because of distance. We also keep and feed them there.
Additionally, the house accommodate patients that are admitted at QECH and are awaiting surgery. These are stable patients who can be in the wards either because the wards are full or because the doctors want to prevent a hospital acquired infection that may prolong and delay the surgery.
We, as well use the house to train parents and persons of SBH on continence management,. long term care and other skills development trainings.
We have a coordinator and a caretaker for the house who are parents to children with spina bifida.
So the Kanjedza house in not merely a building of bricks. It is a building of hope.
