We still have along way to go....the battle is still on...

In today's Malawi news, some chiefs in MJ are protesting the UNESCO listing of Mt Mulanje Biosphere Reserve as one among World's Cultural Heritage sites citing they were not consulted a claim which raises many questions from many well meaning communities if these chiefs are honest enough or they are just being used.

Today our executive committee had a monthly branch meeting which took place at our office in Mount Mulanje Conservation Trust (MMCT) building, this is according to the WESM constitution which stipulates that every branch is suppose to be holding such kind of monthly meetings as it helps the branches to appreciate where they are doing better aswel as identifying their shortfalls and mapping the way forward on how to improve in their day to day activity implementations.

Six (6) of the executive members out of nine (9) attended the meeting which was chaired by the current Branch chairperson Mr Harrison Palapandu who is a secondary school Head teacher at Dzenje Community Day Secondary school in the district.

The meeting also looked and praised at the partnerships the branch currently has and echoed on a need to continue strengthening relationships and corrabolation with other CSOs including the government within the district aswel as finding more potential partners in the environmental conservation efforts at the branch level. Economic challenges were also among the agendas discussed during the meeting.

Today together with Mulanje Youth Organisation and Sapitwa Arts we monitored trees which were donated and planted at Nansomba Technical College early this year during the national tree planting season. This was exercise was aimed at appreciating the growth of the tree and record the tree survival rate where the trees were planted.

A total of 230 trees were planted during the planting activity and now during the monitoring tour a record of 85% survival rate has been captured.

Many thanks to Nansomba Technical Collage management for a good job they are doing in making sure that the trees are being taken care off until they fully grow.

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2025

Today 5th June, WESM Mulanje branch joins Malawi and the world in commemorating the under the theme #"Beat_Plastic_Pollution" Plastics threatens our health well-being, Ecosystems including Biodiversity we have as a country.

For decades, plastic pollution has seeped into every corner of the world reaching into the water we drink and the food we eat and in our bodies.

As we are renewing our commitment towards environmental protection, let us also rethink on our daily plastic usage in our homes and work space, we need to stand tall to end our dependency on plastics and switch for alternatives i.e. Use of woven baskets, fabricated carrying bags when going for shoppings and other home activities etc.

Lets take action! Prevention is better than cure! Together we can!

Happy 2025 World Environment Day!!!

On 16th to 17th this month, WESM Mulanje with support from Mount Mulanje Conservation Trust organized a school environmental education trip to Mount Mulanje Biosphere Reserve which was aimed at shaping the perception of learners toward the environment as well as helping them change myths and misconceptions about environmental conservation which includes the margestic Mt Mulanje in particular. The learners were taken to Chambe Hut which is almost 1,800sqrMs above sea level.

It was also aimed at allowing the learners to appreciate the beauty of mt Mulanje including knowing the endemic species within the biosphere reserve , learning on proper waste management which is critical to the environment, learning more about Invasive Alien Species(IAS) that hinders regeneration of wildlife resources and touring Mulanje cedar plots on the mountain which is at risk of extinction among the activities done with the learners.

Ulongwe Model and Samson primary schools participated in this sponsored trip which comprised of 28 learners (14 from each school) with one teacher from each school including the media.
