At a meeting organised by the Women’s Legal Resources Centre under the Action for Paid Childcare Transformation project, BLAYACO joined fellow CBOs, chiefs and Social Welfare officers to reflect on the challenges facing childcare providers and employers.

We have learnt that many caregivers and employers have limited knowledge of Malawi’s labour laws. This has led to cases of low pay, unfair dismissal, long working hours and frequent disputes.

Financial strain remains one of the major pressures affecting the sector.

As BLAYACO, we are committed to raising awareness on labour laws, promoting dialogue, and working with community leaders to encourage fair labour practices.

We recommend continued sensitisation, simplified legal information and stronger support systems for resolving disputes.

Informed stakeholders will help build a fair and stable childcare system for all.

Courtesy Visit by the National AIDS Commission

BLAYACO hosted a courtesy visit from the National AIDS Commission to review progress in HIV prevention interventions and discuss bottlenecks affecting implementation.

In 2024, BLAYACO partnered with DAPP Malawi and other youth led organisations to implement a Gender and HIV and AIDS focused package. Despite funding constraints, BLAYACO continues to sustain key community and peer led activities initiated under the project.

The Commission appreciated the organisation’s commitment to continuity beyond project support. Key challenges highlighted included volunteer fatigue, limited financial resources, and the need for strengthened coordination and technical support.

The visit created space to reflect on sustainability and identify ways to strengthen youth led HIV prevention efforts going forward.

16 Days of Activism 2025: End Digital Violence

BLAYACO joins the world in calling for an end to online abuse against women and girls. Digital violence is growing and young women face the biggest risk. This year we are strengthening our efforts to keep girls safe both offline and online.

Through the MHARE Project with Hlanganisa Community Fund, we have supported women and girls living with disabilities and helped communities respond better to violence. Our work under the DREAMS Project with DAPP Malawi, funded by CDC and PEPFAR, has given girls skills, confidence and information to protect themselves, including in digital spaces.

As BLAYACO, we continue using our online platforms to spread awareness, share safety tips and challenge cyberbullying. We believe every woman and girl deserves a safe digital space.

Let us stand together against digital violence.

The workshop, which took place at Crossroads Hotel in Blantyre, is focused on supporting youth-led organisations to sustain their work as the project approaches its phase-out in 2027.

On day one, BLAYACO, alongside fellow youth-led organisations, showcased its community impact at Impact Private Secondary School, one of its implementation areas under group Village Headman Musa Magasa, T/A Machinjri.

BLAYACO highlighted its ongoing partnership with DAPP and several key initiatives.

Also inclusive among the listed is its interventions in Menstrual Hygiene and Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).

The organisation also reflected on previous projects that have successfully phased out, all of which continue to leave a huge impact on the communities and catchment areas it serves.

The event was officially opened by the Director of Youth in the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ms. Judith Msusa, with remarks from Chiradzulu District Commissioner, Mr. Francis Matewere.

Day two of the workshop is set to feature youth-led organisations from Chiradzulu, with the final day dedicated to mapping capacity gaps and creating actionable sustainability plans.

Four Officials from Bwalo La Ana Youth Active Community Organisation (BLAYACO) recently successfully completed a four-day HIV Self-Test training organized by DAPP Malawi in Blantyre facilitated by Ministry of Health Trainers.

The training brought together youth-led organisations from Blantyre and Chiradzulu, aiming to equip us with essential knowledge and skills for distributing OraQuick self-test kits within our communities.

OraQuick is an oral fluid-based HIV testing kit that ensures privacy and encourages early detection, an important tool in the fight against HIV.

Throughout the sessions, we gained valuable insights on how to effectively engage with community members, approach clients, and coordinate with local health facilities to ensure proper linkage to care.

We were also introduced to the ScanForm system a digital tool that captures and processes data from physical forms, helping to improve accuracy and efficiency in reporting.

Additionally, we deepened our understanding of supply chain management, a crucial area that will help us improve the delivery of services in our target areas.

We believe this training is a significant milestone in strengthening our efforts toward a youth-led, community-based HIV response. We are ready to put this knowledge into action for the benefit of our communities.
