UN for Malawi's climate smart agriculture

Lilongwe, October 25: The United Nations (UN) has expressed it's commitment to continue working with Malawi Government as it redefines it's commitments in climate change mitigation and adaptation through climate smart agriculture.

UN Resident Coordinator Maria Riberio made the remarks in Lilongwe Monday evening during the UN Day celebrations.

She said the UN is set to working with Malawi Government by ensuring that Malawi farmers continue to be more productive by using climate smarts ways of agriculture.

She said Malawi, as one of the countries impacted with climate change, needs to adapt to ways of fighting climate change by adopting resilient ways.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nancy Tembo said Malawi has had challenges some of which could be addressed by Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

She emphasised on the need for the country to mitigate against climate change, build resilience and empower it's people.

The UN Day is an annual anniversary of the UN that marks the UN Charter's entry into force. It also celebrates the achievements since the UN establishment in 1945 after replacing the League of Nations.

The commemoration, which was held under the theme 'Malawi and UN: Breaking New Grounds for an Inclusive and Resilient Society' highlighted what the UN is about, it's values and Malawi's contributions, which became a UN member in December 1, 1964, to the UN.
