Attacks on schools continue to rise around the world.

In 2025, 1,680 attacks on schools were recorded worldwide, a 33% increase compared with the previous year.

More broadly, an estimated 258 million children and adolescents have had their education disrupted by crises worldwide, including 93 million who are entirely out of school.

Nearly 80% of crisis-affected children who are out of school, some 74 million, live in just 20 countries facing the world’s most severe crises.

On the International Day to Protect Education from Attack, UNESCO calls for stronger protection of education, for all parties to conflict to respect international law and for education to continue in safety and dignity, even in the midst of crisis.

📢 Vacancy Announcement: National Consultant – Integrating Climate and Environment into Teacher Training (CSESI)

UNESCO is inviting applications for a National Consultant to support the integration of climate change, environmental sustainability and disaster risk reduction into teacher training programmes in the Maldives.

The consultancy will include reviewing existing teacher training resources, assessing teachers’ and school leaders’ readiness, and supporting the development and updating of teacher training materials and teaching aids.

Consultancy Period: 6 months
Duty Station: Maldives
Work Location: Remote
