The Maldives’ first dedicated Shark Research & Conservation Centre is now officially open. 🦈

What began as a dream during a conversation around a kitchen table is now a real place where people from all ages can come to learn about the country’s apex predators through educational exhibits and community events.

Together with the Fuvahmulah City Council, we celebrated this milestone on Shark Awareness Day with an opening ceremony, Quran recital, a speech from the Mayor, and reflections from our team on the journey that brought us here.

Watching friends, families, students, dive professionals, visitors, and community members fill the centre - sharing hedhikaa, exploring the exhibits, and discovering the stories behind years of research - was a moment we’ll always treasure.

Our vision is that this centre becomes a place where science feels accessible to everyone. A place where people can discover - and get involved in! - the research happening in Maldivian waters by our team members and collaborators from across the country, and where young people can begin to imagine themselves as the next generation of shark scientists.

Today, in a few hours (!) we are officially opening the Maldives Shark Research & Conservation Centre in Fuvahmulah - the first dedicated facility of this kind in the country.

More than just our HQ or a laboratory, this is a place where science, conservation, education, and community come together. An open space for researchers, students, dive professionals, local communities, and visitors to learn, collaborate, exchange ideas, and get involved in our projects across the Maldives.

Inside you’ll find research facilities, exhibits, educational displays, and a hub for citizen science and collaboration. From hands-on field research to community outreach and training events, this centre represents a new home for our work in the Maldives.

This milestone would never have been possible without the incredible support of our team, volunteers, partners, donors, friends, and the community. Thank you to everyone who believed in this vision and helped turn it into reality.

Phase I of our Fincam Project and training completed successfully! We are immensely proud to be the first NGO utilising this technology on tiger sharks in the Indian Ocean.

From deployment to retrieval all the way to the preliminary analysis of the footage, this was an incredible learning opportunity for our team, opening up new avenues for advancing non-invasive shark research in the Maldives.

Our biggest gratitude goes to from for making this project possible!

We are immensely grateful to and for sponsoring our fieldwork and the long distances spent searching for the to cams once they popped up!

A huge thank you to the dive community if Fuvahmulah for their support of this work and the dive guides that joined us for the training workshops as well as in the water!

Our first CATS Fincam has been successfully deployed on Manike F-138, a female tiger shark first identified by our colleagues from in October 2021.

In addition to capturing high-resolution video, the Fincam is also equipped with a temperature and depth sensor, gyroscope and accelerometer, providing us with key insights into her movement patterns and habitat use.
Manike is now the first Maldivian tiger shark carrying this non-invasive technology on her dorsal fin.

This project has been an amazing team effort bringing together local shark guides, researchers and international scientists and we are deeply grateful to:

Last week we held the first of many community training workshop for the deployment of FinCams supported by our advisor, Dr. from and our friend from !

The cameras are attached to the dorsal fins of tiger sharks using non-invasive clamps designed to safely corrode and release in seawater. By capturing video and environmental data from the shark’s perspective, FinCams offer a rare glimpse into their behaviour, movements, and interactions in the wild.

Some of the most important people in this work are the local shark guides, who know these animals better than anyone through years of time spent in the water alongside them. The workshop focused on sharing knowledge and training together — from understanding the mechanisms behind the clamp to safely attaching the cameras in the field.

It was inspiring to see science and local expertise come together to build new collaborative protocols for shark conservation in the Maldives. 🙌🏼🦈
