This report presents the findings of the Maldivian Photographers
2020 survey, an independent assessment of the state of the
photography industry in the Maldives. Conducted between 19
29 May 2020 through an online questionnaire, the survey
gathered responses from 132 photographers representing
diverse levels of professional engagement from hobbyists to
full-time professionals.
The findings reveal a creative sector that is vibrant yet
economically fragile, technically well-equipped but structurally
informal, and deeply impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite significant personal investments estimated collectively
at MVR 2.7 million the majority of photographers operate
outside formal registration and taxation systems.
The report identifies key issues: lack of financial regulation,
limited institutional recognition, and vulnerability to crises. It
recommends targeted policy actions to strengthen creative
enterprise infrastructure, formalize business practices, and
introduce financial literacy and protection mechanisms for
independent photographers
