🌱 Happy World Bamboo Day!

Today, we celebrate bamboo — a fast-growing natural resource with the potential to support climate resilience, capture carbon and contribute to greener island ecosystems.

Through our flagship Bamboo for Climate Mitigation project, close to 4,000 bamboo plants have been planted across the Maldives, working alongside local councils and communities to explore the role bamboo can play in building a more climate-resilient future.

From community planting to the growing Vaikaradhoo Bamboo Park, every new shoot represents another step towards greener islands and stronger ecosystems.

This World Bamboo Day, we celebrate the communities helping this movement take root across the Maldives.

Highlights from the TVEC programme capture students learning through hands-on activities, practical sessions, and shared experiences. Alongside their vocational training, students had the chance to explore workplace environments, take part in career guidance, and see how the skills they were developing could be applied in real settings.

Atmosphere Foundation’s involvement helped bring these learning experiences closer to the students, creating opportunities to learn beyond the classroom and gain a better understanding of where their skills could take them.

As part of the vocational training programme at Zikura International College, participants gained hands-on experience in carpentry, learning practical techniques through guided training and working directly with tools and materials. Supported by Atmosphere Foundation, the programme gave participants the opportunity to develop skills through practice and apply what they learned to their own projects.

These moments from the carpentry sessions reflect the value of learning by doing. From understanding the basics to gradually taking on more detailed work, the training helped participants build practical knowledge and a skill they could continue developing beyond the programme.

In 2023, The Reading Room conducted training sessions for teachers as part of the Reading Right initiative, supported by Atmosphere Foundation. In 2024, the Vaavoshi Festival brought communities together to celebrate the marine environment and raise awareness of the importance of protecting sea turtles and their habitats. Organised by the Olive Ridley Project Maldives, the festival combined education, creativity, and community participation to inspire a shared commitment to marine conservation.

Through interactive activities, cultural performances, and environmental awareness sessions, the festival encouraged people of all ages to connect with the ocean and understand the role each of us can play in protecting it. It reflects how community-led initiatives can foster lasting appreciation for the natural environment and inspire positive action for future generations.

In 2024, Aged Care Maldives, with support from Atmosphere Foundation, conducted health screening and elderly care outreach programmes in HDh. Vaikaradhoo and Kumundhoo. The initiative provided senior citizens with access to specialist consultations, health screenings, caregiver support, and practical guidance to promote healthy ageing and overall well-being.

By bringing these services closer to island communities, the programme helped improve access to care while raising awareness of the importance of early intervention and continued support for older adults. It reflects a shared commitment to enhancing quality of life and strengthening community-based care across the Maldives.
