I’ve absolutely loved my 5 months living in Mauritius, but we need to talk about my biggest issue here: the constant catcalling. Getting ready for Port Louis today, my friends and I weren't excited, we were just stressing over how to cover up as much as possible to avoid harassment. It’s exhausting to deal with.
1 The Harassment: I’ve literally been catcalled 5 times just walking down a single street.
2 The Fetishization: There is an uncomfortable culture of inappropriate behavior, and foreign women are heavily fetishized.
3 The Normalization: The worst part is that it’s just accepted as "normal" culture here.
Women shouldn't have to stress about simply existing in public spaces without being harassed. Has anyone else experienced this here? We need to start calling it out.
