Yet in Mauritius, our rivers face growing pressures, while many of the challenges affecting them remain poorly understood.
Through the RECOS project, we are working to better understand and protect the Jacotet River in Bel Ombre by promoting a Ridge-to-Reef approach that recognizes the deep connections between our mountains, rivers, wetlands, mangroves, lagoons, and coral reefs.

• They regulate water quality and filter sediments naturally.
• They provide habitats for unique species such as migrating juvenile goby fish (bisik).
• They nourish wetlands and mangrove forests that serve as vital fish nurseries.
• They help prevent pollutants from reaching the coast.
• They protect seagrass meadows and fragile coral reefs by delivering cleaner freshwater to the ocean.
• They connect entire ecosystems, creating a more resilient environment from ridge to reef.
This project also promotes collaboration between local communities, terrestrial managers, and coastal stakeholders to improve environmental resource management and strengthen ecosystem resilience.
Funded through the RECOS (Resilience of Indian Ocean Coastal Zones) project by the Commission de l'océan Indien - Indian Ocean Commission, AFD - Agence Française de Développement, and Fonds Français pour l’Environnement Mondial (FFEM), this initiative brings together scientists from Reef Conservation and experts from GroundTruth and NatureMetrics to advance the understanding and conservation of river ecosystems in Mauritius.
