The Hospitality and Food Section was established on the 12th October 1970 and was known as the Hotels, Restaurants and Food Section. The Section was organised at a time when the tourism industry in Malta was flourishing and subsequently new catering establishments and new hotels were being build. Since its establishment the Section expanded and today it represents the vast majority of the hospital

ity, entertainment and food manufacturing places in Gozo, Comino and Malta. Today the Section enjoys recognition in all major hotels chains, restaurants, and a major food exporting firm. It also represents employees in all animal food manufacturing industry as well as other food industry, beverages and casinos. At the moment the Section is facing several major tasks, among others to improve conditions and rate of pay for every employee it represents. Another task is to pe*****te and organise employees in various supermarkets around the island. The Section is also striving to organise employees in local bars and pubs. Another major task of the Section is to establish European Works Council and to see that European Directives are implemented in every work place. The Section, through the General Workers’ Union, also pressures the Government to amend Legal Notices concerning employees in the entrainment industries to improve their quality of life at the work place. On the European Level the Section is a member of the European Federation of Food, Agricultural and Tourism Employees and constantly takes part in the discussion on the European Level. On a global level the Section is represented in the International Union of Food Agricultural, Hotel, Restaurant, Catering, To***co and Allied Workers’ Association. In both international organisations, the Section Secretary is a member of the Executive Committee.

Farsons Group

On the 5th of January, we were delighted to welcome a group of first-year students studying for a Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety at the University of Malta. This is the 25th year since the Centre for Labour Studies - University of Malta introduced the Health and Safety course. The students, who are currently undertaking an introductory module titled ‘Work, Industrial Relations and the Business Environment’, were led by their lecturer Professor Godfrey Baldacchino. The students received presentations from Farsons representatives George Steve Darmanin (H&S Security Manager) and Charles Briffa (QA Technician, Workers’ H&S Representative) at the Farsons Head Offices. Following the presentations, the group toured the Logistics Centre, Brewhouse, PET Hall, Packaging Hall and Keg Plant.

The students enjoyed an insightful day and gave very positive feedback, and we’d be happy to welcome them back any time. Wishing them the best of luck in their studies 👏
