Managing expiry dates at scale is a constant challenge for retailers.

Manual checks are time‑consuming — and still leave room for error.

7‑Eleven Thailand addressed this by implementing GS1 DataMatrix barcodes to automate expiry control at checkout.

The result:

-Expired products can be automatically flagged and blocked at checkout.
-Customer complaints about expired products dropped to zero.
-Store operations became faster and simpler through reduced manual checks.

As 7‑Eleven explains, this has made their quality assurance processes “both stronger and easier.”

A clear example of how GS1 2D barcodes can improve product control, simplify operations and increase customer confidence — without adding complexity.

Consumers expect more transparency and better shopping experiences. That’s why leaders across retail and consumer goods — in 160+ countries — support the transition to GS1 2D barcodes such as QR Codes powered by GS1.

✅ Consistent point-of-sale scanning
✅ Better shopping and consumer experiences
✅ Accessible product information at scale
✅ One global standard for product identification and data

By aligning around a common global standard, organisations can collaborate more effectively and enable greater consistency across markets, trading partners and systems.

For emerging food brands, clear information matters.

Time, resources and packaging space are limited — but the need for clear information is not. Creative Nature, a UK snack brand, uses GS1 2D barcodes such as QR Codes powered by GS1 to connect products to digital information.

As founder Julianne Ponan explains:

“Within 30 minutes I was set up, ready to go.” Today, consumers can access ingredient and allergen information in one scan — using the same barcode that can support both retail operations and consumer engagement, while keeping packaging clear and simple.

A simple way for emerging brands to meet growing information needs.

Consumers expect accurate, timely information about the products they buy—from safety and recycling guidance to sustainability claims.

AI can help deliver this at scale, but only when it is grounded in trusted product data. Poor data quality does not just reduce efficiency; it undermines confidence and trust.

GS1 standards help support consumer engagement that is accurate, consistent and reliable.
