On the 19th of November, we organised a Seminar at the University of Malta. The seminar was led by Dr. Sandro Lanfranco and Mr. Nathan Gatt.

During the seminar, Dr. Lanfranco discussed the importance of trees 💪 and the difference between invasive and alien species, and their impact on the Maltese environment. On the other hand, Mr. Gatt delivered a short presentation on the 'Grow 10 Trees Project' and the propagation of local flora

Through their leaves and bark, trees absorb harmful pollutants and release clean oxygen for us to breathe. In addition, they improve the air quality, conserve water, preserve soil, and support wildlife. As a result, trees play a vital role in our everyday life, and during the Geography Awareness Week, we wanted to raise as much awareness as possible about the importance of trees because forests, jungles, trees, and plants produce the oxygen we breathe. If we destroy them, we destroy ourselves.

P.s If you want to grow a plant or a tree, but you do not know how to sow and take care of a tree, we are going to attach some tips taken during our seminar on vegetation propagation for your reference as well 😊😁

Remember to save trees (and maybe hug a tree) because plants can survive without humans, but we cannot survive without plants 🌲🌳🌴

On the 12th of November, we organised a GIS Workshop at the University of Malta. Using the data collected from our Tree Mapping Session, we generated a map of Wied Ghollieqa 😄

Ms Christa Pisani led the following workshop and throughout the workshop, the participants learnt how to use ArcMap and eventually generate a map as well 💪

The map was then sent to Non-Governmental Organisations and respective authorities in order to facilitate the management and conservation of trees in the following area 😊😇🌲

We strongly believe that whenever you generate data you should share it with everyone instead of leaving it on a shelf to collect dust.

Tree Mapping x Tree Planting ✔️

We would like to thank all the participants that attended the event and the rangers from Ambjent Malta for all their help and assistance with tree identification and tree mapping 🤗😊

We also would like to thank ACT - Malta as well. They kindly gave us four trees which we planted in the valley of Wied Ghollieqa.

Last but not least, I would like to thank Tamsin Caruana from Nature Trust - FEE Malta & Wied Ghollieqa Environment Centre who helped us organise the event in Wied Ghollieqa and ensure this event was a huge success 🙌

Our work here is not done. We still have two more events coming up in the next two weeks, Next week we have the GIS Workshop at the University of Malta and then the following week, we have a Seminar at the University of Malta as well. In addition, we are going to continue on mapping Wied Ghollieqa in the near future, and we will organise a number of clean-ups in the following valley as well. We also want to remove as many invasive species as possible as well 💪

This year's Olympic Medals are made from e-waste that the Japanese residents were encouraged to donate.

What a nice touch by the Japanese residents and the Olympic organisers. If we're creative, we would be able to upcycle and re-use materials instead of throwing them away and give them a new life

The Department of Geography at the University of Malta is organising a seminar for prospective students on the 5th May between 13 and 14 CET. During the seminar, representatives from EGEA Malta will deliver a small talk/presentation on EGEA and its contribution and opportunities it offers to the local geographic scene

Today, many countries around the world are celebrating the 51st anniversary of Earth Day. But what is Earth Day? 🤔

Earth Day was founded in 1970 in order to bring environmental issues into the national spotlight 🙌 Earth Day is now a global celebration that sometimes extends into Earth Week, an event that focuses on green living. According to Earth Day Network (EDN), more than 1 billion people are involved in Earth Day activities, making it “the largest secular civic event in the world.” 😍 But why do we celebrate Earth Day? Because, together, we have the power to Restore Our Earth. 💪 In fact, the theme for Earth Day 2021 is Restore Our Earth. EARTHDAY.ORG’s theme for Earth Day 2021 will focus on natural processes, emerging green technologies, and innovative thinking that can restore the world’s ecosystems. In this way, the theme rejects the notion that mitigation or adaptation are the only ways to address climate change. Instead, it is up to each and every one of us to Restore Our Earth not just because we care about the natural world, but because we live in it. We all need a healthy Earth to support our jobs, livelihoods, health & survival, and happiness. A healthy planet is not an option — it is a necessity.

So what should we do?

Host environmental literacy webinars for students.
Use school education handbooks to organize educational events.
Organize online seminars & awareness campaign that tackle environmental issues.
Making a short video (1 minute) to support the environmental movement & share it with your friends.
Go through environmental podcasts, movies, articles, etc., and also share the information with your friends and family members.
Connect with local news outlets and radio channels to promote environmental awareness and
Plant flowers and herbs in your home garden and switch to a plant-based diet.

Remember, together, we have the power to Restore Our Earth and a healthy planet is not an option — it is a necessity.
