The National Council of Women notes the concerns expressed by the Malta Womens Lobby. NCW’s position remains clearly pro-life. We believe that any response to crisis pregnancy must protect both women and unborn children, and must be rooted in compassion, practical support, and respect for life.
It is important to clarify that NCW’s concern is not, and has never been, to shame, expose, or target women and girls who may be vulnerable, afraid, pressured, abandoned, or in crisis as wrongly understood by MWL. On the contrary, NCW believes that such women deserve immediate support, safe guidance, and meaningful alternatives. To be absolutely clear, NCW did not call for women in crisis to be investigated. Our concern was with the reported locked boxes themselves, the distribution mechanism, and the persons or networks responsible for placing abortion-inducing medication in anonymous or unregulated channels. This is a matter of public safety, safeguarding, and accountability.
We agree that no woman should be left alone. Where we differ is in the conclusion that decriminalisation of abortion is the compassionate solution. NCW believes that society has a duty to strengthen support before, during, and after pregnancy, including emotional, medical, social, financial, and practical support for women facing difficult circumstances.
A pro-life position is not indifference to women’s suffering. It is a commitment to ensuring that women are not made to feel that ending the life of their unborn child is their only way out of crisis. Women deserve more than fear, abandonment, secrecy, or pressure. They deserve protection, accompaniment, and real support that upholds the dignity and life of both mother and child.
Notwithstanding our differing positions on abortion, we sincerely hope that common ground can be found in advocating for stronger, more accessible support structures for women and girls facing crisis pregnancies. This is where public energy should be directed: towards ensuring that no woman is left isolated, unsupported, coerced, or made to believe that she has no real alternative.
NCW will continue to advocate for a society that responds to crisis pregnancy with compassion, protection, and practical support, while remaining faithful to its pro-life principles and its commitment to the dignity of both women and unborn children
