The Tanapag wave buoy has been redeployed!

Moored approximately 5 miles off the western shore of Saipan, this buoy measures wave height, direction and energy - critical information for boaters using Tanapag Harbor.

MAHALO to our CNMI partners Pacific Coastal Research & Planning, and Captain Cecilio with the Lucky Harvest!

The Tanapag Wave Buoy has been measuring wave data off Saipan since 2012. It is part of a network of 20 wave buoys deployed by PacIOOS throughout the Pacific Islands in CNMI, Guam, Palau, FSM, RMI, and Hawaiʻi.

Long-term observations provided by the PacIOOS buoy network strengthen wave and atmospheric models and forecasts, which enhances the safety and resilience of our coastal communities.

On Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, the PCRP team conducted outreach and a tree planting event at the Center for Living Independently in the CNMI (CLI)!

The plantings were filled with so much fun for the forestry team and the CLI team. Collaborations like these remind us of how enjoyable community forestry can be.

A big shoutout to CLI for inviting us and making this happen! We can't wait to see the trees thriving in their new home. .𖥔 ݁ ˖.✦ ݁˖

🌳 it’s !

This week, our forestry tehnicians Jether and Deven assisted with the Forest Inventory Analysis efforts in Tinian! They got to work on and complete 5 plots across Tinian from steep limestone forests to flat sabana.

They really got into the flow of navigating the plots, accurately measuring trees and distinguishing what gets logged.

“A simple yet difficult challenge for us was the terrain and state of vines in the jungles. A couple of sections of the trail were either abrupt inclines or a tangle of vines” shared Jether.

“The people we got to work with have been nothing but amazing and always gave motivation and encouragement whenever fatigued or feeling down,” Deven communicated. Both Jether and Deven felt rewarded being able to work with the USFS and receive training that would be difficult to attain otherwise.

🤝 In collaboration with 500 Sails, PCRP was able to deploy the second Backyard Buoy last Friday! The Sugar Dock buoy and the Akino buoy are now actively transmitting data. Check out Slide 5 for the QR code to the Spotter Dashboard where you can access information like wind speed, subsurface water temperature, and so much more!

These deployments were made possible through strong partnerships with 500 Sails, Backyard Buoys, and Pacific Islands Ocean Observing System (PacIOOS). Thanks and much appreciation to everybody who was involved. Enjoy the waters safely and responsibly! 🩵🌊

Last week, five of our forestry technicians completed the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) data collection protocol training held by the U.S. Forest Service. They learned all about measuring trees and shrubs- from how to measure trees, what to measure, how accurate measurements are, to tree measuring standards.

It was a great opportunity for our forestry technicians to learn new and hone existing skills in the field!
