Myanmar’s displacement crisis has been reported to surpass 5 million people, but those of us working on the ground know the reality is even higher. Many families remain unreported, constantly moving, or completely cut off in rural areas/mountains or jungles.

Humanitarian funding to Myanmar remains dangerously low and through junta means. Millions are facing food insecurity, malnutrition is worsening, and basic survival has become impossible for many families. In Yangon, even one egg can cost around 600 kyat. For displaced families, this is not just inflation, it is hunger becoming normalised.

Now the rainy season is almost here, and danger is escalating rapidly. Many communities have already been without clean water for weeks. People are being forced to drink contaminated water, and when the rains and flooding begin, IDPs will be among the most vulnerable. Waterborne diseases such as cholera, giardia, acute watery diarrhoea, and other infections are always a major threat during rainy season. This year, with escalating and indiscriminate attack, as well as severe malnutrition already weakening children, the elderly, and the sick, the death toll will be higher.

The junta’s attacks are not random. Across Chin, Sagaing, Arakan, and other areas, civilians have been forced to flee again and again as airstrikes, clearance operations, and attacks destroy villages, IDP shelters, clinics, food storage/fields, and access routes. These attacks are pushing already displaced people into even more dangerous conditions just as the rains arrive.

Myanmar’s visibility has shifted again. It is no longer being seen only as a country in crisis, but increasingly as a country rich in resources, strategic access, and investment potential, controlled by an illegitimate military desperate to trade anything for recognition. The danger is that some governments and investors appear willing to engage with that reality while millions of civilians are left in the peripheral.

Myanmar does not need deals that reward the military for destruction. It needs urgent humanitarian access, direct support to local responders, clean water, food, medical aid, and protection for civilians.

Behind every statistic is a family displaced, a child drinking unsafe water, a village erased, and a population being abandoned at the exact moment the danger is about to become even worse.
We are urgently raising funds to purchase lifesaving water and medical aid for the many in need.

The malnutrition crisis continues to grow throughout Myanmar, SFH teams have been delivering food and supplies to some of the most vulnerable groups in many areas, however the rise in fuel costs means we are having to take other measures.

The recent attacks waves of attacks through arakan, chin, sagaing and mandalay region have been devastating. Many airstrikes and bombings caused major loss of life and displacement yet again, IDPs are left with nothing and are again running for their lives with no resources or support.
The attacks on rice farms also means the costs of rice in many areas will increase even further, meaning families which are already going without will have even less.

We are urgently preparing mass loads of food and supplies including tarps in preparation for the rain, many IDPs are also without basic drinking water and are suffering from waterborne diseases which will only worsen when flooding starts.

It's hard to believe its already been a year since the earthquake, to us and to many others it feels just like last week. The crisis and devastation are still present to this day, many lost loved ones, homes and hope, volunteers who helped with recovery, search and rescue live with what they saw and that trauma daily, some who were trapped were stuck for days next to deceased bodies.
The recovery teams were pulling dead bodies out so often finding places to put them became hard, treatment units for injuries was so overwhelmed people were left without basic aid for days, leaving them vulnerable to the elements, and then the rain came. All while this was occurring, as teams desperately tried to treat, recover and rescue victims the junta continued attacks and blocked aid to those in need.
The utter devestation from the quake has left a scar on many. We are still building shelters for those displaced, we are still searching for missing persons to this day.

There are still many who are in extremely vulnerable situations after the quake, many unable to afford new accommodation, many with life changing injuries, some left permanently disabled, many unable to get frequent access to food and basic support.
Do not forget those who are still suffering here on the ground.

The junta continue their extensive and brutal attacks, their constant attacks have destroyed villages and even some of our water and medical units, but no matter how much they destroy we will not stop helping we will not stop rebuilding. No matter how tired and how difficult it is we will not fail those in need.

In many cases we respond during active attacks, but we are also the ones which stay behind to provide longer term support. This means building shelters, teaching and building WASH facilities.

If you want to join us at Skills For Humanity-SFH heres a little about us - We provide food, shelter, medical aid, evacuations, education, safe passage (destruction of landmines and removal of uxo) evacuations, rebuild/build centres and homes, we are the emergency response for many people, and the ones who stay behind during active attacks to ensure civilians are out safe, and offer longer term solutions after attacks.

5 years ago the Myanmar military staged a coup, after losing in a landslide in a democratic election, on the day of voting thousands of myanmar citizens happily posted their finger showing they had casted their vote, many of which for the first time, elderly, young, any and all ethnicities, they all casted their vote. Only for it to be snatched away by the junta on February 1st.

Quickly protests erupted to peacefully fight the injustice and stand up for democracy. Then the junta became even more violent, killing and detaining civilians left right and centre.
Before the coup the military killed and harmed civilians in conflict, but 5 years ago they began to gun down teenagers and students in the streets for the world to see their brutality. They had nothing left to hide so they became more brutal. For 5 years we have seen corpses after corpses, burned body after burned body, children clinging and crying while holding on to their deceased parents after airstrikes, mother's crying and handing us their deceased infants, we've seen the weaponised starvation and weaponised gbv/rape, we've helped on every frontline, destroyed countless landmines and uxo, tried to feed as many as possible, fought for the release of detainees, and built aid centres from the ground up. But it is not enough.
The junta has not just ripped away lives, tortured and detained, it has killed futures of countless citizens. It has taken so much from people and right now so many are in need and so many are suffering because of them.

What can be said is, despite the ruthlessness they face every single day, so many ERO/EAOs, CDMers, PDFs average citizens fight every day, from protest to fighting on the front, to carrying on through the day. The strength is immeasurable.
This isn't an anniversary, this is one year closer to victory and freedom.
