“For the Australian Census, ancestry is based on a person’s self-assessed identification with an ethnic or cultural group. Therefore, where our people collectively self-identify as ZOMI, the appropriate collective ancestry designation is ZOMI—not a town, locality, dialect, or subgroup name.”

📢 ZOMI COMMUNITY CALLS FOR OFFICIAL RECOGNITION IN AUSTRALIA’S 2026 CENSUS

BRISBANE, Australia — Zomi Press

The Zomi Community of Queensland Inc. has called on the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) to officially recognize “Zomi” as a distinct ethnic category and to make Census-related information available in the Zomi language.

The requests were presented during a meeting on Friday, July 24, 2026, between Zomi community representatives and ABS officials, including Tanya Hornik, Director of Inclusive Strategies and Engagement, and Mark, Census Field Manager.

The community presented two key requests:

✅ Census information and educational materials should be available in the Zomi language.

✅ “Zomi” should be officially recognized as a distinct ethnic category in Australia’s Census data.

According to the community’s statement, ABS representatives explained that future recognition will depend significantly on how Zomi people identify themselves when completing Census forms.

📌 Zomi people across Australia are therefore encouraged to identify themselves as “Zomi.”

Consistent identification can help strengthen the case for official recognition and support future access to language services, multicultural programs, education, healthcare, research, community funding, and other public resources.
