📅 Isaky ny 22 Mey dia ankalazaina maneran-tany ny Andro Iraisam-pirenena ho an’ny Fahasamihafan’ny Zavamananaina. Amin’izany fotoana izany dia milaza ny Firenena Mikambana fa: “Ny andro iraisam-pirenena tsirairay dia fotoana iray hampahafantarana ny vahoaka momba ireo olana lehibe atrehin’izao tontolo izao. 🌍 International Day for Biological Diversity 2026: Ampombilava Students Raise Awareness Among Local Communities About Biodiversity Conservation
🏫 Environmental education in schools is an effective way to help local communities better understand the importance of biological diversity and the ecosystems that surround them.
📅 Every year on 22 May, the world celebrates the International Day for Biological Diversity. On this occasion, the United Nations states: “Each international day represents an opportunity to inform the general public about issues of major concern. These observances provide opportunities for governments and civil society to raise awareness and mobilize resources.”
đź“– In this context, the Environmental Education Class of EPP Ampombilava organized an awareness-raising event to celebrate this day in 2026. Environmental awareness is also one of the subjects included in the school curriculum.
📍Two villages located around the Ankarafantsika Forest were targeted for this activity: Ambikakely and Ampombilava. The event was organized by the Kew Madagascar team, from “Weston Global Tree Seed Bank”: Unlocked project, the students of the Environmental Education Class, and their teachers.
The celebration was honoured by the presence of the Head of Operations (CHEVOP) of Madagascar National Parks, as well as local partners including Durrell, FOSA Association, Planète Madagascar NGO, Scoute Antilin’i Madagascar, and the RIR Association.
đź“Ł Several key messages were shared with the communities:
• 🔥 “Whoever burns the forest burns the nation; everyone must be vigilant about wildfires.”
• 🚯 “Plastic waste should not be discarded indiscriminately, and everyone should learn how to sort and manage waste properly.”
• 🌱 “Everyone should plant trees every year to ensure the long-term survival of forests and the protection of wildlife within the ecosystem.”
• 🏹 “Hunting should be avoided because animals are our friends and must be protected.”
• 🪓 “Forest exploitation is prohibited or should be carried out selectively in order to safeguard our biodiversity.”
