Vingt-six membres dรฉvouรฉs de lโ€™รฉquipe de lโ€™aire protรฉgรฉe Makirovana - Tsihomanaomby du Missouri Botanical Garden (MBG) ont participรฉ ร  ces deux journรฉes riches en รฉchanges, facilitรฉes par le Safeguarding Officer de RBG Kew Madagascar.

โœ…ร€ travers une approche interactive mรชlant discussions et jeux de rรดle, les participants ont pu :
- Comprendre en profondeur les concepts de prรฉjudice et d'abus.
- Intรฉgrer les principes de tolรฉrance zรฉro et de protection des victimes.
- Se sensibiliser aux comportements sรปrs et au code de conduite.
- Maรฎtriser les mรฉcanismes de signalement en toute confidentialitรฉ.

๐ŸŒณThe Fitantanana Maharitra Holovain-jafy (FMH) project places people at the heart of its work. For us, safeguarding the human rights, safety and well-being of our teams and communities is of paramount importance. No form of harm, abuse or exploitation has any place in our work.

๐Ÿ‘It was with this strong commitment in mind that a training and awareness-raising session on Safeguarding and PSEAH was held on 18โ€“19 March 2026 in Sambava.
Twenty-six dedicated members of the Makirovanaโ€“Tsihomanaomby Protected Area team from the Missouri Botanical Garden (MBG) took part in these two days of fruitful discussions, facilitated by the Safeguarding Officer from RBG Kew Madagascar.

โœ…Through an interactive approach combining discussions and role-play, participants were able to:
- Gain an in-depth understanding of the concepts of harm and abuse.
- Embed the principles of zero tolerance and victim protection.
- Raise awareness of safe behaviours and the code of conduct.
- Master the mechanisms for reporting incidents in complete confidentiality.

On Thursday 26 March in Antananarivo, a crucial milestone was reached for the future of Madagascarโ€™s biodiversity. Under the auspices of the ๐Œ๐ข๐ง๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐ฒ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐„๐ง๐ฏ๐ข๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐’๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ข๐ง๐š๐›๐ฅ๐ž ๐ƒ๐ž๐ฏ๐ž๐ฅ๐จ๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ (๐Œ๐„๐ƒ๐ƒ), a high-level workshop, co-organised with the ๐…๐ข๐ญ๐š๐ง๐ญ๐š๐ง๐š๐ง๐š ๐Œ๐š๐ก๐š๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐ซ๐š ๐‡๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฏ๐š๐ข๐ง-๐ฃ๐š๐Ÿ๐ฒ (๐…๐Œ๐‡) project, was held to radically transform our understanding of fires in protected areas.

๐Ÿ—“๏ธOn 9 and 10 March 2026, nine members of the Bemanevika and Mahimborondro protected area teams (The Peregrine Fund Madagascar โ€˜TPFโ€™ site) gathered for a training session.

Why take this approach?
๐ŸšซBecause no form of abuse, exploitation or neglect has any place in our mission. This training, facilitated by the Safeguarding Officer at RBG Kew Madagascar, had the following objectives:
- Understanding: Defining the concepts of harm and exploitation.
- Prevention: Raising awareness of the code of conduct and ethical behaviour to adopt.
- Respond: Master the mechanisms for reporting and managing incidents.

๐ŸŒณDu 19 au 26 fรฉvrier, l'รฉquipe du projet FMH, en collaboration avec des experts internationaux, s'est rรฉunie ร  Antananarivo en vue de lโ€™รฉvaluation du plan de gestion des feux de chaque site.

๐ŸŽฏL'objectif รฉtait de tirer les leรงons de la mise en ล“uvre du plan de gestion des feux de l'annรฉe derniรจre afin d'รฉlaborer une stratรฉgie plus solide et plus rรฉsiliente pour 2026 et au-delร .

๐Ÿ“ŠCet atelier stratรฉgique a permis de confronter les expรฉriences de terrain ร  travers une analyse franche des rรฉussites, des dรฉfis et des obstacles rencontrรฉs lors de la derniรจre saison des feux. Entre lโ€™examen dรฉtaillรฉ des plans de gestion de chaque site et une session technique passionnante sur lโ€™utilisation des donnรฉes spatiales pour optimiser notre planification, ces รฉchanges riches en donnรฉes et en rรฉcits de terrain renforcent notre capacitรฉ dโ€™action collective. Nous repartons avec une vision claire des outils modernisรฉs pour mieux protรฉger nos รฉcosystรจmes.

๐Ÿ“ˆPerspectives pour 2026 : Nous ne nous contentons pas de regarder en arriรจre, nous construisons l'avenir. Nos rรฉsultats attendus comprennent :
- La mise ร  jour des plans de gestion des feux pour tous les sites du projet
- Le renforcement des partenariats afin de coordonner les interventions d'urgence
- De nouvelles propositions de financement dans le cadre de la gestion des feux

๐ŸŒณFrom 19th to 26th February, the FMH project team, in collaboration with international experts, met in Antananarivo to evaluate the fire management plan for each site.

๐ŸŽฏThe aim was to learn from the implementation of last year's fire management plan to develop a more robust and resilient strategy for 2026 and beyond.

๐Ÿ“ŠThis strategic workshop provided an opportunity to compare experiences in the field through a frank analysis of the successes, challenges and obstacles encountered during the last fire season. Between the detailed review of each site's management plans and an exciting technical session on the use of spatial data to optimise our planning, these exchanges, rich in data and field stories, strengthen our capacity for collective action. We leave with a clear vision of the modernised tools needed to better protect our ecosystems.

๐Ÿ“ˆOutlook for 2026: We are not content to look back; we are building the future. Our expected outcomes include:
- Updating fire management plans for all project sites
- Strengthening partnerships to coordinate emergency response
- New funding proposals for fire management

๐ŸคTogether, we are moving towards integrated fire management to protect our forests, wildlife and communities.
