🌴 Introducing “Support a Palm”

At Hayat al-Nakhil, supporting a palm means supporting the regeneration of the oasis system in M’Hamid, Morocco.

A date palm is not only a tree. In an oasis, it creates shade, supports crops, helps protect soil and water balance, and sustains local agricultural life.

Your contribution helps support:

🌱 planting and caring for new date palms
🤝 local farmers’ work
💧 oasis regeneration practices
🧠 local knowledge passed down over generations

This is not about owning a specific palm tree. It is about becoming part of a long-term process to help keep the oasis alive.

THE REALITY OF THE OASIS

For generations, the oasis of M’Hamid sustained life in the desert.

Today, large parts of the palm grove are disappearing under the sand.

Nearly two-thirds of the oasis have already been lost.

When palm groves disappear, it is not only trees that vanish.

Water systems weaken.
Agriculture becomes harder.
Knowledge passed down over generations begins to disappear.

This is not happening somewhere far away.

It is happening here. Slowly. Every year.

Hayat al-Nakhil was born from the desire to help regenerate part of this living system — together with local farmers and local knowledge.

***Regeneration also begins with education***

At Hayat al-Nakhil, we believe that regenerating the oasis is not only about planting palm trees.

It is also about passing knowledge to the next generation.

Recently, children from the Azaghar School Group (م/م أزغار المديرية الاقليمية زاكورة) in Tagounite visited our garden in Kasbah Desert Camp to learn more about oasis ecosystems and the importance of palm groves.

The meeting took place around April 18th — the International Day for Monuments and Sites, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of preserving humanity’s historical and cultural heritage.

For us, the oasis itself is a historical and cultural heritage landscape.

It deserves to be recognized and protected as a living historic garden.

Today, these ecosystems are increasingly threatened by desertification, water scarcity, and the gradual disappearance of traditional knowledge and ways of life.

That is why education and awareness are essential.

During the visit:
🌴 the children discovered the palm garden
💧 they learned why palm groves are essential for life in the oasis
🌱 together, they planted a new palm tree

The children named the palm Azaghar, after their school.

Ayoub, the caretaker of the garden, spoke with the children about the role of palm trees in oasis life: how they grow, what they produce, how they reproduce, and the care they require.

For many of the children, it was also a moment to reconnect with knowledge rooted in their own land.

At Hayat al-Nakhil, we believe that the future of the oasis depends on today’s children and young people.

If younger generations lose their connection with the land, the oasis itself may disappear.

We want young people to believe that it is possible to build a future in their own region — without being forced to leave for large cities or abroad.

Regeneration also means creating reasons to stay, care, and continue.

🌴 Connecting people, palms, and place.

A heartfelt THANK YOU to the children and teachers of the Azaghar School Group (مجموعة مدارس أزغار) for sharing this day with us and helping give life to this initiative 🌴

🌴 The culture of the palm

In oasis regions, palm trees are much more than part of the landscape.

They shape everyday life in many different ways:

🌿 agriculture and food systems
🏡 architecture and building traditions
🍽️ local cuisine and daily practices
🤝 community relationships and shared knowledge

Palm groves are living cultural systems that connect people, land, and generations of knowledge.

When palm groves disappear, it is not only an environmental loss — it is also the disappearance of ways of living, building, cultivating, and relating to the oasis.

At Hayat al-Nakhil, regeneration means preserving both ecosystems and cultural knowledge rooted in the oasis.

🤝 Meet Ayoub

Ayoub grew up in the oasis of Mhamid, surrounded by palm trees and agricultural life.

Over the years, the oasis has faced many challenges — drought, water scarcity, and the gradual loss of palm groves.

But the connection to this place remains strong.

Today, Ayoub is part of a process that seeks to bring the oasis back to life — planting new palms and working with the land step by step.

🌴 This is where Hayat al-Nakhil begins.

A project connecting people, palms, and place.

🌴 Why do palm trees matter in oasis ecosystems?

In the Draa Valley, date palms are not just trees.
They are the foundation of life in the oasis.

Palm groves create a unique environment where agriculture becomes possible in extremely arid conditions.

🌿 They provide shade that allows other crops to grow
💧 They help regulate water and soil conditions
🌾 They support a layered agricultural system

But their role goes beyond ecology.

Palm groves also sustain:

local livelihoods
agricultural practices
knowledge passed down over generations

Today, these systems are under increasing pressure due to desertification, water scarcity, and the gradual loss of traditional practices.

When palm groves disappear, entire oasis systems begin to collapse.

At Hayat al-Nakhil, regenerating palms means restoring more than trees — it means supporting a living system.

🌴 Introducing Hayat al-Nakhil
Palm Project in Mhamid, Draa Valley (Southern Morocco)

Hayat al-Nakhil is a palm regeneration project based in the M’Hamid oasis, in south-eastern Morocco’s Drâa-Tafilalet region.

In oasis ecosystems, date palms are not just trees. They are the foundation of life — supporting agriculture, water systems, local livelihoods, and knowledge passed down over generations.

Today, these landscapes are under increasing pressure from desertification, water scarcity, and the gradual loss of traditional practices.

🤝 What we do

Hayat al-Nakhil works with local farmers to regenerate palm groves through community-based practices rooted in local knowledge.

Our work connects: people + palm trees + the oasis ecosystems

🌱 Our approach

We are developing a palm-based support model that allows visitors and supporters to contribute to the planting of new date palms in M’Hamid.

Each palm becomes part of a long-term regeneration process, contributing to the restoration of soil, water balance, and agricultural life.

🌍 Why it matters

When palm groves disappear, entire oasis systems begin to collapse. Today, nearly two-thirds of the M’Hamid oasis have already been lost.

Regenerating palms means supporting:

local ecosystems
farmers’ livelihoods
traditional knowledge systems

🌴 A different approach

This project is not only about planting trees.
It is about working with local communities and building on existing knowledge — not replacing it.
