On 7 and 8 October 2026, the Drafting Committee on the Risks and Harms Associated with Online and Digital Addictions (BIO-ALN) held its first meeting in Strasbourg.

Bringing together multidisciplinary expertise from across the Council of Europe and beyond, BIO-ALN began its work on a draft Recommendation to member States addressing the risks and harms associated with online and digital addictions.

On 29 September 2026, the Bureau of Permanent Correspondents of the Council of Europe International Co-operation Group on Drugs and Addictions (Pompidou Group) met in Strasbourg to discuss priorities and advance the Groupโ€™s work.

As Chair, Dr Franz Pietsch guided the meeting through exchanges of expertise, different perspectives and shared priorities โ€” supporting dialogue and consensus among members of the Bureau.

How can international co-operation on drugs and addictions keep pace with evolving challenges? This was at the heart of the Pompidou Group Bureauโ€™s meeting on 29 September, as members took stock of progress under the Groupโ€™s 2026โ€“2029 Work Programme and looked ahead to its next priorities.

Members discussed preparations for upcoming activities on online and digital addictions, drug control services at airports and mail centres, organised crime related to drug trafficking, emerging synthetic drug trends and law enforcement co-operation.

The meeting highlighted membersโ€™ continued commitment to sharing experience, strengthening co-operation and turning common priorities into practical action. ๐Ÿค

On 8 December, the Pompidou Group of the Council of Europe, under the Mexican Vice-Presidency and in co-operation with CICAD/OAS, will bring together law enforcement professionals, policymakers and experts for a ๐‘๐ž๐ ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐“๐ก๐ž๐ฆ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐œ ๐’๐ž๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐š๐ซ ๐จ๐ง ๐„๐ฆ๐ž๐ซ๐ ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐’๐ฒ๐ง๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ญ๐ข๐œ ๐ƒ๐ซ๐ฎ๐  ๐“๐ซ๐ž๐ง๐๐ฌ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐‚๐ก๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ž๐ง๐ ๐ž๐ฌ.

From new synthetic drugs and precursor diversion to illicit manufacturing, clandestine laboratories and operational intelligence-sharing, the seminar will be a space to exchange experiences, explore innovative approaches and strengthen co-operation across borders.

Discussions will continue on 9 and 10 December, during the 3rd Law Enforcement Conference on drug trafficking, organised crime networks and international co-operation.

โœ… The 7th Expert Network Session on General Aviation has just concluded in Strasbourg.

Over 70 experts, law enforcement, and border officials from across Europe and beyond spent two days exchanging experience, exploring emerging threats, and sharing practical solutions to prevent the criminal use of general aviation for illegal drug trafficking.

Organised by the Pompidou Group with support from the EUโ€™s EMPACT and the Benelux Secretariat, the session focused on innovative approaches to surveillance, risk detection, and strengthening cooperation between authorities and private-sector stakeholders.

The event demonstrated the importance of international partnerships in responding to rapidly evolving security threats and in countering criminal networks that exploit aviation routes for illicit drug trafficking.
