🚨 Seven LGBT+ people who called the police for help in Morocco are now going to prison. 🚨

After calling for help during a mob attack outside their home, they were arrested themselves: more than 10 people in all.

On October 5, a court gave its verdict. Seven were sentenced to eight months in prison – without a single lawyer present to speak for them.

Their appeal is their last chance for a fair hearing, but they cannot win it alone.

Local activists are demanding proper legal representation, a full investigation into the attack and any online exposure of the victims, and an end to prosecutions based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

food-basket distribution initiative carried out by Safe Place International through ReFoRr Maroc, aimed at providing immediate humanitarian support to refugees and asylum-seekers facing economic hardship and difficulties meeting their basic needs.
The activity reflects an important principle of refugee protection: protection is not only about legal status and documentation—it also includes helping vulnerable people access basic necessities, dignity, safety, and social support.
In Morocco, the UNHCR (United Nations Refugee Agency) works with the Moroccan authorities and partner organizations to protect refugees and asylum-seekers. While Morocco continues to develop its national asylum system, UNHCR handles registration and refugee status determination under its mandate, in cooperation with Moroccan authorities. UNHCR also supports access to documentation, legal assistance, health and education services, livelihoods, social assistance and other protection services. �

UNHCR's protection work also includes the principle of non-refoulement, meaning refugees and asylum-seekers should not be returned or expelled to a country where their life or physical integrity would be at risk. UNHCR and its partners also provide legal assistance in situations including detention, deportation, abuse and violence. �

The role of ReFoRr Maroc
Through community-based initiatives such as this food distribution, ReFoRr Maroc seeks to complement existing protection efforts by responding directly to the everyday needs of vulnerable refugees, particularly people who may experience poverty, social exclusion, discrimination or difficulty accessing basic necessities.
The partnership with Safe Place International demonstrates how refugee-led and community-based organizations can contribute to humanitarian response by identifying needs within refugee communities, mobilizing assistance and creating spaces where refugees can receive support with dignity.
ReFoRr Maroc's approach is therefore centered on community solidarity, protection, advocacy and empowerment. Beyond emergency assistance such as food support, ReFoRr can help connect refugees with relevant protection actors and services, raise awareness about their rights, advocate for vulnerable LGBTQ+ refugees, and encourage stronger collaboration between refugee communities, humanitarian organizations and institutions.
