My comment on the assisted su***de Bill and the impacts on Black and Brown people because of combined racism and disability discrimination.

Zita Holbourne, co-founder of Black Activists Rising Against Cuts (Barac), told the Morning Star: “There needs to be a focus on addressing racism not just in health but in all aspects of life.”

She called for “improved standards and provision of care and services so that disabilities and health conditions can be well managed and supported under a social model of disability in order to give black and brown disabled people quality of life rather than feeling they have no choice but to die.”

Ms Holbourne explained that black and brown people in this situation are “facing double discrimination because of both race and disability.

“The government’s own impact assessment on race identifies adverse impacts on race grounds if this Bill was passed but does not give the full picture.”

She added that black and brown people in Britain face discrimination and barriers in “healthcare access and provision because of institutional racism, fuelled by over a decade of austerity leading to cuts.”

They also face “substandard housing, discrimination and barriers in education and employment and are more likely to live in the most deprived areas that experienced the biggest cuts.

“In addition there is a lack of trust and access to healthcare because of language barriers, hostile and racist immigration policies and laws, some of which have barred access to the NHS, race disparities in a range of healthcare provision and deaths at the hands of the state which includes not just in policing and prisons but hospitals too.”

My comment on the hugely disproportionate number of unsolved crimes involving Black people who have been murdered.

Black Activists Rising Against Cuts UK national chair Zita Holbourne said: “The police claim it is down to low trust among black communities in the police.

“This is only part of the story. The trust is not there because of institutional racism and because black people are not safe when it comes to policing.”

She blamed disproportionate stop-and-search conduct and deaths in custody, urging the police to address the root causes of their racism.

“There needs to be an inquiry into these unsolved cases.

“Behind the numbers and stats are human beings and families or loved ones left in limbo, unable to move forward, waiting for answers, waiting to grieve. They need to be reviewed, reopened and every effort made to solve them,” she said.

CAMPAIGNERS called for an inquiry today after research revealed that more than nine out of 10 victims of unsolved murder crimes belong to ethnic minorities.Analysis of unsolved homicides in London between 2019 and 2023 showed that non-white people represent 92.9 per cent of all unsolved murder victi...

I am one of 120 signatories from 114 organisations including mine - BlackActivistsRising, signing as co founder and National Chair of BARAC UK - who have sent this letter to the Prime Minister today.

Successive governments and political leaders have failed to tackle racism and many have contributed to a climate policies and laws that have allowed it to grow.

As organisations working across racial justice, migrants’ rights, faith and wider civil society, we urge you to commit to developing and implementing a cross- governmental anti-racism strategy and delivery framework to advance racial justice across all policy areas.

But Zita Holbourne of Black Activists Rising Against Cuts told the Morning Star the question was “not relevant when considering who gets a visa,” suggesting to deny visas based on such a concern would violate applicants’ human rights.

“The proposal is clearly racist in intent, designed to target black people in communities,” she added.

“Britain’s wealth was built off the backs of colonisation and enslavement and trafficking of African people as human chattel…

“It is legitimate to call for reparations for the damage, trauma, pain and economic impacts on individuals, communities and countries. Reparations in any case are not limited to financial compensation but can be about education, healing, knowledge, heritage and culture — as in [the Caribbean Community’s] 10-point plan.”

CAMPAIGNERS against racism and colonialism condemned Reform today for an “utterly ridiculous” proposal to block visas for anyone coming from a country that calls for reparations for the slave trade.Reform UK home affairs spokesman Zia Yusuf claimed Britain made “huge sacrifices to be the first...
