🎓 What is PEARL?
An English-language, hands-on training program designed to equip patients and advocates with practical knowledge about therapies, patient pathways, and leadership in respiratory care.

How many myths are there really about patient engagement?

At PiCC United, we are sharing 10 common myths about patient engagement that we often encounter in research, pharma, healthcare systems, and collaborations with patients and relatives.

Today we look at Myth 4:
“Only highly educated patients can engage effectively.”

➤ Fact: All patients and relatives hold valuable knowledge about how a disease affects everyday life. Patient engagement is not about academic education, but about lived experience, perspectives, and the ability to share real-world insights that can improve research, care, and decision-making.

Some of the myths in this series are simple misunderstandings.
Others reflect long-standing structures and assumptions that still shape how patient engagement is practiced today.

With each post, we explore one myth and reflect on how patient engagement can become more inclusive, meaningful, and impactful.

We hope this series will contribute to dialogue, reflection — and perhaps even a little debate.
