Another memorable edition of the EUF Open Space has come to a close.

Since the establishment of the Project Manager and Advisor Community, the Open Space has served as a valuable forum for members to learn from one another, strengthen collaborations, and help shape the network’s future project engagement.

A big thank you to our Community members for generously sharing their experiences and expertise with the wider network, and to our hosts at Høgskulen på Vestlandet HVL as well as all participants, for making this edition such a meaningful exchange.

🌱 New publication: Policy Recommendations for Greener Erasmus Mobility

After two years of research, surveys, and collaboration across Europe, the Sustainable Erasmus+ Travel project is proud to share the final policy recommendations report.

The policy recommendations draw on survey data, connectivity analyses, and institutional feedback to offer concrete, actionable guidance for:

✅ European institutions and national agencies
✅ Higher education institutions
✅ Mobility practitioners and Erasmus+ coordinators

Green travel in Erasmus+ is not just an aspiration. It requires structural support, better infrastructure, and the right policy framework. These recommendations are our contribution to making that happen.

🗳️ Who gets a seat at the table when decisions about Erasmus+ are made?

Right now, the answer too often leaves out the people closest to the programme: universities, students and practitioners.

Our first recommendation is to involve European stakeholder organisations meaningfully in programme governance. Decisions about Erasmus+ should reflect the realities on the ground, not just top-down priorities.

This also means publishing implementation proposals in advance, so beneficiaries can consult their representatives before votes are cast.

Better governance = a better programme for all. 💬

Anyone working in an International Relations Office knows that Erasmus+ mobility management goes far beyond handling applications and paperwork. It requires balancing institutional priorities, student and staff needs, policy developments, quality standards, and an ever-growing range of administrative responsibilities.

To support colleagues navigating these challenges, the EUF Training Week in Riga, hosted by Latvijas Universitāte, will feature the Erasmus+ KA1 training: Student and Staff Mobility Unpacked: Tools, Tendencies and Practical Insights.

The training is specifically designed for entry-level professionals and newcomers in International Relations Offices, providing practical competences for managing Erasmus+ KA1 mobilities and understanding their broader place within European higher education policy.

📅 26–28 October: for colleagues with less than 3 years of experience
📅28–30 October: for colleagues with more than 3 years of experience

If you are looking for practical solutions, fresh perspectives, and an opportunity to connect with fellow mobility professionals, this training is for you.

This week marked the successful launch of our new large-scale initiative, the “Go Ready Abroad” three-part webinar series for students from the 100 EUF member institutions.

The series was designed to provide practical support for students preparing for their mobility experience, covering topics such as accommodation and travel arrangements, intercultural awareness and mental well-being, as well as expectations abroad and civic engagement.

The series, delivered in cooperation with EUF members and ESN, was built directly on the outputs of recent Erasmus+ KA2 projects, turning project results into practical guidance for students. The webinars translated resources, tools, and good practices into actionable advice that students could immediately apply to prepare for their mobility period.

The webinars attracted a diverse, international audience of students who actively contributed to discussions, making the webinars particularly dynamic. They appreciated the pragmatic, hands-on approach. The most lively discussion was sparked by accommodation, making friends, and wanting to become more independent and discover new cultures.

We are delighted to have helped participants tick off several important items on their mobility preparation checklist and feel more confident about their upcoming experience abroad. We wish all participants a rewarding, enriching, and successful mobility journey.

Special thanks to Sári Brunn (Erasmus Student Network), Lisa Kattinger (Philipps-Universität Marburg), Bianca Vitalaru (Universidad de Alcalá), Afra Schacher (Universität Zürich ), Eötvös Loránd Tudományegyetem - ELTE, David RODRIGUEZ SANCHEZ (University of Luxembourg), Salome Dermati (EUF)

🎓 Big news from the EUF: We have released our policy recommendations on the future of Erasmus+ 2028-2034.

Years of research and cooperation have brought us here.

In the last 40 years, Erasmus+ has changed the lives of over 16 million students. But with the next programme period around the corner, it is a chance to go further: to build a more inclusive, ambitious, green and fit for the realities of 2028 and beyond.

Over the coming weeks, we will be sharing our 8 key recommendations rooted in the experience of universities, students and practitioners who make this programme a reality.

The decisions now will shape European higher education for a generation.

🎓 The EUF has joined fellow European higher education stakeholders in welcoming the European Parliament CULT Committee's draft report on Erasmus+ 2028–2034 while calling for more.

The proposed €47.39 billion budget and minimum sector allocations are steps in the right direction yet the numbers still fall short of what's needed to expand the programme, support new actions, and meet growing ambitions.

Our key concern is the proposed 73.4% budget share for education and training. The figure represents a de facto cut of up to 10 percentage points vs. the current programme. That means fewer mobility opportunities and reduced access for learners across Europe.

We call on the European Parliament to restore the budget share to its current level because Erasmus+ changes lives and the funding must match the programme’s ambitions.

Course catalogues in Europe have come a long way.

They are widely available, structured, and aligned with ECTS. But the DACEM survey findings show they are still evolving when it comes to supporting real mobility needs.

Some of the key takeaways:
• Strong on structure, weaker on usability
• Reliable for recognition, less so for planning
• Fragmented across systems and platforms
• Not always aligned with mobility timelines
• Missing a shared definition and purpose

The full report dives deeper into these findings, with detailed analysis and perspectives from staff across Europe.
