We would like to take a moment to extend our heartfelt thanks to Mathilde Ostertag our incredible president, for her amazing work and dedication over the years. Her leadership and tireless involvement have been a true inspiration, and the association has reached new heights thanks to her vision and efforts.

At the same time, we are thrilled to introduce our new president, Alexandra Slack. As a coach, her unique expertise and perspective will be a tremendous asset to our association, ensuring we continue to grow and thrive. Her nomination fills us with pride and excitement, and we have no doubt that she will carry on the great work done while bringing her own passion and ideas to help the association continue to rise.

Her speech during our annual Christmas party last Tuesday was nothing short of extraordinary—a perfect reflection of the energy, commitment, and direction she will bring to this role. It left us all inspired and eager for the future.

We are excited for what lies ahead and look forward to supporting her in this next chapter for our association

In anticipation of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (25 November), LILLA is proud to promote the Luxembourg movie « Breathing Underwater ».

“Breathing Underwater is an emotional, character-driven drama set in the secretive world of a women’s shelter. It tells the story of Emma (Carla Juri) who is whisked away in the dead of night, covered in bruises and unexpectedly pregnant. As she grapples with her pregnancy and her emotional shackles to her husband Marc, Emma rediscovers lost facets of herself through her unlikely camaraderie and strife with the women and children of the shelter. Individual traumas intertwine and despite their differences, a delicate sisterhood emerges as they push one another to fight for their self-worth and independence.”

LILLA is happy to partner with the Network and is giving away 50 tickets to our members and corporate members on a first come first served basis. If you are an individual member, secure your ticket below (Membership required). The movie will be followed by a Q&A in presence of the movie director and some of the actresses as well as some of the Luxembourg associations representing women and the victims of violence.

For those who would like to network, the evening will continue with a drink at Tender near the movie theater.

Norway 🇳🇴 meets Luxembourg 🇱🇺 !!

On Friday 13th September, LILLA - Ladies In Law Luxembourg Association had the exceptional honour of welcoming representatives from the Young Lawyers subcommittee of the Norwegian Bar Association who arrived in Luxembourg to conduct a study on work-life balance initiatives, with a particular focus on labour law and parental leave rights.

And the discussion was fascinating!

Amongst other topics we covered:

⭐️ the legal frameworks for maternity leave and parental leave in Luxembourg and Norway;

⭐️ the challenge of retaining women lawyers;

⭐️ cultural and economic barriers to taking leave (applicable to both men and women);

⭐️ the impact of leave on the employer;

⭐️ whether formal leave policies help or hinder;

⭐️ the impact of a firm’s culture on whether leave is requested / taken and the perceived and real impact on your career if it is;

⭐️ women lawyers’ careers in general (including knowing what you want in your career and having the courage to ask for it); and

⭐️ how to support lawyers (men and women) returning to work after a leave of absence.

It was somewhat reassuring (though also a little disappointing) to hear that Norway faces similar challenges to Luxembourg in terms of the retention, engagement and promotion of women lawyers.

However, with ⚡️trust and ⚡️flexibility emerging as key themes from the discussion, we left with the common understanding that we can continue, together, to change things for the better, and that we each have a role to play in moving the discussion forward.

A big thank you to A&O Shearman Luxembourg for providing us with the space for our fruitful discussion, and to our LILLA members Daphné Rosseeuw (Head of HR at DLA Piper Luxembourg) and Caroline Bocklandt (Partner at EHP) for attending the discussion to share their experience and perspectives, alongside LILLA board members Anne-Sophie Besançon and Alexandra Slack.

We look forward to hearing more from the Norwegian Bar once they’ve synthesised their research, and will be sure to keep you updated!
