On January 13, Lithuania 🇱🇹 marks 35 years since a night that changed our history forever.

After 50 years of Soviet occupation, Lithuania made history on 11 March 1990 by becoming the first republic to declare independence from the USSR. Moscow refused to accept this and tried to force Lithuania back under its control.

On 13 January 1991, tanks rolled through the streets of Vilnius. Soviet forces attacked the TV Tower and moved to seize the Parliament. Unarmed civilians stood shoulder to shoulder, forming human shields to defend their freedom.

Fourteen innocent people were killed and hundreds were injured – yet the nation stood firm. Their courage sent a clear message to the world: freedom cannot be taken by force.

We honour those who lost their lives and remember that freedom is never guaranteed – it must be protected every single day.

❗❗❗Applications are now open for the Lithuanian Language and Culture Winter Course at Vytautas Magnus University (VMU), taking place from January 5 to February 3, 2026.

This four-week immersive program offers:

✅Daily Lithuanian language A1 classes in Vilnius, Lithuanian language A2 classes in Kaunas or Lithuanian language B1 classes online
✅ Engaging sociocultural lectures and workshops
✅ Visits to museums and cultural sites
✅ Excursions and enriching field trips across Lithuania

VMU is awarding 21 scholarships to international students, lecturers, researchers, and individuals of Lithuanian origin!

On-campus participants (in Kaunas or Vilnius) will receive a 100% tuition fee waiver plus a scholarship to cover travel, accommodation, food, and other expenses.
Online participants will benefit from a 100% tuition fee waiver.

Vilnius University (VU) invites international students, lecturers, researchers, and individuals of Lithuanian origin to to join the Lithuanian Language and Culture Course this winter. It offers a unique opportunity to learn Lithuanian language, immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of Lithuania, delve into the captivating history of Kaunas, and connect with participants from every corner of the world.

Program Details:

Course Level: Beginners (A1 level)

Course Dates: from 05-01-2026 to 03-02-2026

Application deadline: 08-10-2025

Location: Kaunas Faculty of Vilnius University

What to Expect:
