OFFICIAL STATEMENT BY COUNSELLORS ASSOCIATION LESOTHO (CAL)

The Counsellors Association Lesotho (CAL) has noted the recent public remarks made by the Honourable Minister of Finance Dr. Retšelisitsoe Matlanyane, in which programmes such as Pastoral Care and Counselling were cited as no longer relevant in a changing global landscape.

As the professional body representing trained counsellors and pastoral care practitioners, we express concern over statements that may undermine the vital role of counselling in Lesotho’s health, education and social development sectors. Counselling services remain essential in addressing mental health challenges, GBV and the growing demand for psychosocial support in our communities.

We assure all CAL members and stakeholders of our continued commitment to upholding the dignity and integrity of the profession. The Executive Committee will seek constructive engagement with the Honourable Minister to better understand the context of the statement and advocate for informed recognition of counselling services nationwide.

Members are urged to remain calm and committed to ethical service delivery as this matter is addressed through appropriate professional channels.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) today officially launched the national immunization campaign in Quthing, targeting all children aged 0–59 months for measles and polio vaccines.

As the Counsellors Association Lesotho (CAL) one of the organizations actively involved in advocacy under the CHAL sub-grant, we call upon everyone to support the government’s efforts to achieve 95% immunization coverage across the country.

Let us all work together by mobilizing our communities and helping identify children who have missed their vaccines.

To all parents, especially those with young children, please take your children for immunization during this campaign period from 20th to 24th.

Together, we can protect our children and build a healthier Lesotho! 💉🇱🇸

🕊️ A SOLDIER HAS FALLEN 🕊️

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved counsellor, Sebolelo Malebese Qhesi.
Her demise came after a long illness. Though we might say she is now healed, she has left our hearts broken.

She faithfully served as a Professional Counsellor at Berea Hospital, touching many lives with compassion and dedication. The family has informed us that she will be laid to rest on 30 August 2025 at Ha Ramonaheng, Berea.

The Association calls upon all counsellors to join in paying their final respects to this fallen soldier.

Our deepest condolences go to the Qhesi family, the Counsellors Association Lesotho family, and the Ministry of Health for this profound loss especially in these difficult times when the world greatly needs mental health practitioners.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
Psalm 34:18

May her soul rest in eternal peace.

WORLD AIDS DAY MESSAGE FROM COUNSELORS ASSOCIATION LESOTHO

On this World AIDS Day, we stand together under the theme "Take the Right Path." This day serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing battle against HIV/AIDS and our collective responsibility to support those affected by the virus.

As counselors, we recognize the importance of education, compassion, and empowerment in our communities. We urge everyone to take the right path by:

1. Educating Themselves: Understanding HIV/AIDS is crucial. Knowledge dispels myths and reduces stigma. We encourage individuals to seek accurate information and share it with others.

2. Promoting Testing and Treatment: Regular testing is vital for early diagnosis and treatment. We advocate for accessible testing facilities and encourage those living with HIV to adhere to their treatment plans.

3. Supporting Each Other: Let us foster a culture of support and understanding. Reach out to those affected by HIV/AIDS, offer a listening ear, and create safe spaces for open conversations.

4. Advocating for Rights: Everyone deserves to live free from discrimination. We must advocate for the rights of individuals living with HIV/AIDS and work towards policies that promote health equity.

5. Taking Care of Mental Health: The psychological impact of HIV/AIDS can be profound. We encourage individuals to seek help and support for mental health issues and to prioritize their well-being.

As we observe this important day, let us commit to taking the right path together. By raising awareness, showing solidarity, and taking action, we can make a difference in the lives of those affected by HIV/AIDS.

Together, we can create a future where everyone has the opportunity to live a healthy and fulfilling life.
